Carnivale by Alexander Glazunov (1865-1936). Arranged by R. Stilwell. For concert band (Piccolo, Flute 1, Flute 2, Oboe 1, Oboe 2, Bassoon 1, Bassoon 2, Eb Clarinet, Solo Clarinet, Bb Clarinet 1, Bb Clarinet 2, Bb Clarinet 3, Eb Alto Clarinet, Bb Bass Clarinet, Bb Contrabass Clarinet, Soprano Saxophone, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Barit). Grade 5. Score only. Duration 4:00. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.18201). Extracted from one of Glazunov's suites for orchestra, "Carnivale" is a rousing tarantella to be performed at a brisk tempo in 6/8 time. With its rapid tempo and dramatic dynamic changes, "Carnivale" would provide a stirring conclusion to any band concert.Carnivale, a rousing tarantella, is the last of four movements included in A Glazunov Set * which, in turn, have been extracted by the arranger from two of Glazunov's six suites for orchestra. The source for this movement is Characteristic Suite in D major, Opus 9 - an early work composed by Glazunov between 1884-1887. For this transcription the original orchestral version has been edited, with redactions kept to a minimum, for greater succinctness and flow of musical ideas In keeping with the traditional character of a tarantella, Carnivale is to be performed at a brisk tempo in 6/8 time - M.M.= 160 or above. It is in the mold of Rossini's 'La Danza' which was included by Ottorino Respighi in 'La Boutique Fantasque' - even to the extent of being in a minor key. With its rapid tempo and dramatic dynamic changes, Carnivale would provide a stirring conclusion to any band concert.

Pomp and Circumstance No. 2 by Edward Elgar (1857-1934). Arranged by Ton von Grevenbroek. For fanfare band. Classic Arrangement series. Grade 3. Score only. Duration 6 minutes, 5 seconds. Published by Molenaar Edition (ML.023169070-S). Sir Elgar wrote his Pomp and Circumstance March no. 2 in 1901 and it was dedicated to fellow composer Granville Bantock. This second march is less well known than the first, but not because it is any less of a work. After a loud proclaim for attention by the brass, comes a beautiful stacatto theme, which is gradually built up by the addition of instruments, advancing towards the Trio. The Trio in a major key contains a simple melody in thirds in the winds, which is later developed in the brass. The work closes with a short but strong coda.

Symphonic Suite from On the Waterfront by Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990). Arranged by Jay Bocook. For Concert Band (Score & Parts). Boosey & Hawkes Concert Band. Grade 5. Boosey & Hawkes #M051662951. Published by Boosey & Hawkes (HL.48020749). The acclaimed 1954 film On the Waterfront starred Marlon Brando and garnered multiple Academy Awards, as well as a nomination for Bernstein's poignant and evocative music (his only film score). Using music from the film, Bernstein created this 20-minute suite which consists of six continuously flowing movements. Juxtaposing moments of tenderness with elements of cold savagery as depicted in the film, this is a monumental and distinctive addition to the symphonic wind ensemble repertoire. (Grade 5) Dur: c. 20:00.
