Christmas Day by Gustav Holst (1874-1934). Arranged by Douglas McLain. For Choir and Concert Band. Choral Fantasy on Old Carols. Christmas. Grade 3. Full score only. Duration 8 minutes. Published by Baton Music (BF.BM417-SCORE). Christmas Day - a Choral Fantasy on Old Carols', was written in 1910 shortly after Gustav Holst had finished the three groups of 'Choral Hymns from the Rig Veda' and around the same time as the 'First Suite in Eb' for military band. The first performance of 'Christmas Day' was given at Morley College on 28 January 1911. Apparently it was extremely well-received and had a further presentation on 18 February at a music students' 'Tea and Social' event. Holst used a number of well-known carols in this 'fantasy'. Throughout the piece, the composer makes use of 'Good Christian Men Rejoice', 'God rest you merry gentlemen', 'The First Nowell' and a traditional Breton melody used to set the words 'Come ye lofty come ye lonely'. According to contemporary reviewers, Holst's 'Christmas Day' is an extremely attractive fantasia of mostly well known carols, harmonized distinctively but still pleasingly.

Stille Nacht by Franz Xaver Gruber. Arranged by Jos van de Braak. For Choir and Concert Band. Silent Night. Christmas. Grade 3. Full score only. Duration 3 minutes, 30 seconds. Transeamus by Traditional. Arranged by Rob Rouhl. For Choir and Symphonic Band. Christmas Song. Christmas. Grade 3. Full score only. Duration 4 minutes. Published by Baton Music (BF.BM440-SCORE). Transeamus usque Bethlehem' is a traditional Latin Christmas song, which was long erroneously attributed to the German Kapellmeister Joseph Schnabel (1767-1831). In the sixties of the twentieth century it became clear that Schnabel was only responsible for the instrumental arrangement. 'Transeamus' was written for four-part choir, with the men (in the role of shepherds) sing the first stanza and the women (in the role of angels) raids in the second stanzas. At the end, all four voices sing simultaneously. It became a kind of tradition to sing 'Transeamus' at the Christmas midnight mass in the Roman Catholic Church.

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn (1809-1847). Arranged by Rob Rouhl. For Choir and Concert Band. Christmas. Grade 3. Full score only. Duration 4 minutes. Published by Baton Music (BF.BM441-SCORE). Hark! The Herald Angels Sing is a Christmas carol that first appeared in 1739 in the collection Hymns and Sacred Poems, having been written by Charles Wesley but this is not the version widely known today. The popular version is the result of alterations by various hands, notably George Whitefield, Wesley's co-worker, who changed the opening couplet to the familiar one, and Felix Mendelssohn. A hundred years after the publication of Hymns and Sacred Poems, in 1840, Mendelssohn composed a cantata to commemorate Johann Gutenberg's invention of the printing press, and it is music from this cantata, adapted by the English musician William H. Cummings to fit the lyrics of Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, that propels the carol we know. The opening of this arrangement is a brass fanfare as played by the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble.
