Gavin Bryars war vom kurzen melancholischen Gesang, den er 1971 einem Dokumentarfilm uber Obdachlose entnommen hatte, so sehr fasziniert, dass er das Lied 180-mal wiederholte und mit einer ruhigen, harmonisch klingenden Orchestermusik unterlegte. Bryars' Kompositionen vermitteln dem Horer das Gefuhl einer Bildbetrachtung. Es wird namlich nur ein bestimmter Zustand beleuchtet, hier die religiosen Gefuhle des Stadtstreichers.
