Silvana WeV C.5 Band 3c (Romantic opera in 3 acts (3 volumes) - Act III, Music and Text Supplements, Critical Notes, Appendix, Indices). By Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) and Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826). Edited by Markus Bandur. This edition: WGA 1032-30; Cloth-cover, Complete edition. Complete Editions. Carl Maria von Weber - Complete Works, Band 3c. Score and critical commentary. 378 pages. Published by Schott Music (SD.49019299). ISBN 978-3-7957-9448-4. Carl Maria von Weber's fame rests mainly on 'Der Freischutz'. The unprecedented success of this opera overshadowed all his other works and contributed to their increasing fall into oblivion. Certain works such as 'Preciosa', 'Oberon', and 'Euryanthe', the overtures, solo concertos and piano sonatas, the lieder and chamber works enjoyed great popularity and were widely known in Germany and abroad as late as the second half of the 19th century. However, any chance of a revival of Weber's influential and substantial oeuvre was wasted in the 1920s, when a complete edition - begun by Hans Joachim Moser and with potential contributors including Wilhelm Kempff, Hans Pfitzner, Max von Schillings, Fritz Stein and Richard Strauss - failed after the third volume.Ever since there have been numerous attempts to restart a complete edition of Weber's works, but as this kind of project would have required the co-operation of scholars from both sides of the inter-German border, the political situation after 1945 was not conducive to any such enterprise. Careful negotiations led to the first tangible steps in the 1980s. The intention, right from the beginning, was to place Weber's work in context, and not to separate his musical output from his influential work as a writer, critic and organiser in the musical field, but to publish his compositions together with his letters, diaries and other literary output as the best way to document the cross-fertilisation between his musical, literary and practical activities.Since the German re-unification both working-parties concerned - at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, and at the Musikwissenschaftliches Seminar, Detmold/Paderborn - have co-operated on the complete edition of the musical works (c. 45 volumes in 10 series: sacred music; cantatas, odes and other occasional works; stage works; lieder and vocal works; orchestral works; chamber music; music for piano; piano reductions; miscellanea, arrangements and orchestrations; works of doubtful attribution). The diaries (6-8 vols.) are edited in Berlin and the letters (8-10 vols.) and other writings (2 vols.) in Detmold. This complete edition aims to be a reliable basis of scholarly debate as well as for the authentic performance practice of Carl Maria von Weber's music. Conforming to the standards of recent historico-critical editions, the textual material will be based on all available authentic sources, accompanied by a detailed documentation of the genesis and a list of variants for each work. The musicological importance of the works will be evaluated by placing them in their historical context, the presentation of their genesis, history and Critical Commentaries. The letters, writings and diaries will be treated as inter-related and relevant to each other in the commentaries, therefore readers should benefit from a wealth of concise information and cross-references.

Magnificat by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788). For Soli SATB, SATB Choir, 2 Flutes, 2 Oboes, Bassoon, 2 Horns, 2 Violins, Viola, Basso continuo [3 Trumpets, Timpani]. Score available separately - see item CA.3321500. Magnificats, Christmas. Level 3. Complete orchestral parts. Language: Latin. Composed 1749. Wq 215. Duration 42 minutes. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3321519). ISBN M-007-05171-6. With Language: Latin. Magnificats, Christmas. C. P. E. Bach's nine-movement Magnificat (1749), the first great vocal work from his Berlin years, is among the most magnificent sounding, in which the solo vocal parts are also among the most ambitious settings of the "Hymn to the Virgin Mary" (Luke 1). The work fulfills all the criteria required for a larger sacred composition: grandeur, dignity, polyphonic and concertante choral movements, sensitive ("empfindsam") and expressive arias, a long concluding double fugue. This richly scored Magnificat (with 3 trumpets and timp. ad. lib.), which is almost one hour in duration, would be well suited, for example, as the central work on every Christmas or pre-Christmas concert programme.

Bastien und Bastienne by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791). Edited by Ulrich Leisinger. For STB voice soli, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 horns, 2 violins, viola, cello/double bass, [harpsichord]. Stuttgart Urtext Edition. Score available separately - see item CA.5105000. Operas, "Singspiele". Complete orchestral parts. Language: German. Composed 1768. KV 50. Duration 37 minutes. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.5105019). With Language: German. Operas, "Singspiele". The story of Bastien und Bastienne is based on the musical pastoral Le Devin du Village by Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The play was hugely popular in paraphrase and translation and entered the repertoires of travelling companies and children's theaters. A shepherd succumbs to the enticements of the lady of the castle and tries to abandon his beloved. The village soothsayer appeals to his conscience and advises the abandoned Bastienne to feign coyness until Bastien shamefacedly returns to her. Mozart's version, composed in Vienna in the summer of 1768, is based on a text by Friedrich Wilhelm Weiskern that had been in existence since 1764. On his return to Salzburg, he undertook an ultimately unfinished revision of the work, improving the textual underlay and replacing the spoken dialogue with recitative. He also changed the vocal register of Colas and probably that of Bastien as well. The Carus edition is the first to treat these two versions separately.

Theresienmesse in B (Missa in B). By Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809). Edited by Wolfgang Hochstein. For SATB Soli, SATB Choir, 2 clarinets, 2 Clarino/Trumpet, Timpani, 2 Violin, Viola, Basso Continuo, [Bassoon]. B-Dur (B-flat major). Stuttgart Urtext Edition. Score available separately - see item CA.4061000. Masses, Latin. Complete orchestral parts. Language: Latin. Hob. XXII:12. Duration 40 minutes. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.4061019). With Language: Latin. Masses, Latin. The Mass in B flat major by Joseph Haydn is known under the name "Theresienmesse." The reason for this epithet has to this day not been clarified, but it could have to do with a performance of another Mass in Vienna in May 1800, probably in the presence of the Empress Marie Therese. Compared with Haydn's last two masses and the large oratorios, the relatively modest orchestral scoring of the Theresienmesse is notable (for two clarinets, two trumpets with timpani, strings and organ continuo). Thus the Mass is also easily performable in those churches where music programs have only modest means at their disposal - and at the same they can have this treasure from the late Viennese classical period.

Missa solemnis in B (Creation Mass). By Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809). Edited by Volker Kalisch. For Soli SATB, SATB Choir, 2 Oboes, 2 Clarinets, 2 Bassoons, 2 Horns, 2 Trumpets, Timpani, 2 Violins, Viola, Cello/Contrabass, Organ. B-Dur (B-flat major). Stuttgart Urtext Edition. Score available separately - see item CA.4061100. Masses, Latin. Level 3. Complete orchestral parts. Language: Latin. Composed 1801. Hob. XXII:13. Duration 40 minutes. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.4061119). With Language: Latin. Masses, Latin. Within approximately six weeks Haydn, in 1801, composed his "Creation Mass" as the fifth of altogether six late missae solemnes commissioned by his employer, Prince Nikolaus II. Esterhazy. The sobriquet "Creation Mass" is not authentic, but it is probably based on the quotation in the Gloria taken from the oratorio "Die Schopfung".

Mass in C major (Messe in C op. 86). By Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827). Edited by Ernst Herttrich. For Soli SATB, SATB choir, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani, 2 violins, viola, Basso (cello, double bass, organ). Score available separately - see item CA.4068800. Masses, Latin. Complete orchestral parts. Language: Latin. Op. 86. Duration 50 minutes. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.4068819). ISBN M-007-09728-8. With Language: Latin. Masses, Latin. With its tonal language of subjective avowal, the first of Beethoven's two masses opens up new worlds of expression for the liturgical texts of the Mass which are expressly modern and point towards the future. Not to be considered a preliminary work to the Missa solemnis, it is an entirely independent work which set standards for the further development of settings of the Mass in the 19th century. Its newness, of which the composer himself was fully aware ('I do not speak gladly of my Mass, or of myself, but I do believe that I have treated the text in a manner in which only few have treated it.'), paves a way to an hitherto unknown, contemporary avenue to faith which today is still current. Carus presents this important work of church music history in a new critical edition by the Beethoven expert Ernst Herttrich.

XXVI Variazioni sulla Follia di Spagna by Antonio Salieri (1750-1825). Arranged by Gerhart Drijvers. For Concert Band. Grade 5. Full score and set of parts. Duration 22:30. Published by Baton Music (BF.BM107-SET). The stunning XXVI Variazioni sulla Follia di Spagna was the last work by Antonio Salieri - a sort of brooding soliloquy but, at the same time, something of a massive study in timbre and instrumentation, much as Ravel's Bolero was to be in the 20th century. The theme had already been used by a great many composers (D'Anglebert, Corelli, Daquin, etc. ) and was later to arouse the interest of Liszt and Rachmaninov.

Der Schauspieldirektor. (Komodie mit Musik). By Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791). For SSTB voice soli, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 clarinos/trumpets, timpani, 2 violins, viola, cello, double bass. Stuttgart Urtext Edition. Score available separately - see item CA.5148600. Operas, "Singspiele". Complete orchestral parts. Language: German. Composed 1786. KV 486. Duration 28 minutes. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.5148619). With Language: German. Operas, "Singspiele". Der Schauspieldirektor ("The Impresario") was composed in the spring of 1786 to fulfill a commission from Joseph II for performance during a visit to Vienna by the Governor-General of the Netherlands. The visitors were meant to be entertained with a short German and an Italian musical comedy during a festival arranged on short notice in Schonbrunn Palace. The choice of composers fell to Mozart and Salieri. Both pieces spoofed the theatrical practices of the day. Der Schauspieldirektor, by Gottlieb Stephanie the Younger, has a loosely-constructed plot that hinges on the vanity of opera singers and the empty-headedness of many traveling companies. Frank Lustig wants to create a new theatrical troupe, for which Herr Eiler is willing to supply money, but only on condition that his lady friend is allowed to join. In the course of the piece, appearances are made by other ladies with resonant names who want to be retained as singers and who attempt to outdo each other until reason is allowed to prevail.
