Gran Partita, K. 361 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791). For 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 basset horns, 2 bassoons, 4 horns and double bass. This edition: Facsimile. Music Education. A beautiful facsimile edition of one the great treasures of the wind band medium. Sacred. Facsimile. 112 pages. Published by GIA Publications (GI.G-7337). ISBN 1579997228. Sacred. The Gran Partita, K. 361 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is widely acknowledged to be one the great treasures of the wind band medium. However, it is a little-known fact that the autograph score of this work, also known as Serenade No. 10 in B-flat Major has been housed in the Library of Congress since 1941, when it was purchased with funds provided by the Whittall Foundation. Some four years later the Library of Congress went about the task of preparing both critical and facsimile editions of the Serenade; however, the project was ultimately abandoned. Thus for many years the only available reproduction of this amazing score was a simple photocopy that could be purchased from the Library of Congress for the nominal sum of $11.00.In 1976 the Library of Congress remedied that shortcoming when the U.S. Government Printing Office produced a stunning facsimile edition of the original holograph, including an introduction by the noted German American musicologist Dr. Alfred Einstein which had been originally commissioned for the failed project in the 1940s. This volume, created in commemoration of the Bicentennial of the founding of the United States of America, was available for purchase in the years following 1976. Unfortunately, over time the supply of copies was depleted and there was no funding for a second printing of the facsimile. Thus for nearly two decades this volume has been unavailable for purchase. In 2006, the Educational Projects Committee of the American Bandmasters Association (ABA) submitted an inquiry to the Library of Congress to determine if it might be possible to garner support for a second printing of the Gran Partita. It was determined that while the U.S. Congress no longer appropriates funds for project of this kind, the Library of Congress was eager to collaborate with the ABA and any interested publisher that might be willing to consider the project. Dialog with GIA Publications, Inc. over the next twelve months ultimately led to a collaboration between the Library of Congress, GIA Publications and the ABA Educational Projects Committee devoted to the single purpose of making this musical treasure once again available to scholars, conductors, musicians, and other interested individuals. This edition is an accurate reproduction of the Library of Congress publication of some thirty years ago. The American Bandmasters Association is gratified to have sponsored this project and remains hopeful that this facsimile edition of one of the wind band's true masterworks will be a rich and treasured addition to countless music libraries. - Richard Floyd, Chair Educational Projects Committee American Bandmasters Association.

Un baccio di mano (Concert Aria K.V. 541). By Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791). Arranged by Jos van de Braak. For Baritone and Concert Band. Grade 3. Full score and set of parts. Duration 2:30. Published by Baton Music (BF.BM066-SET). The Aria Un baccio di mano (A handkissing) was conceived in May 1788 in Vienna for the singer Francesco Albertarelli as part of the opera Le Geloise fortunate from the Italian composer Pasquale Anfossi. In those days, Mozart lived in great poverty and had a bad health. Maybe that was the reason he had to compose music for some colleagues. The text of this aria is probably from Lorenza da Ponte, the famous Viennese court poet. Mozart again used the main theme of this arietta (a short aria) in the first part of his Jupiter Symphony ( K. V. 551).

Adagio (from the Concerto for Clarinet KV622). By Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791). Arranged by Jos van de Braak. For Clarinet and Concert Band. Grade 3. Score. Duration 7:30. Published by Baton Music (BF.BM088-SCORE). In the central part of the concerto, the Adagio, Mozart's preoccupation with cantabile melody opens a new world of sonority. It opens with a melody which must be one of the most beautiful ever written, sung immediately by the solo clarinet without any orchestral introduction. The more the solo part embellishes, expands, seeming to sprout leaves and tendrils, the more organically the melody seems to grow out of the clarinet tone.

Queen of the Night Aria (Trumpet Feature). By Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791). Arranged by David Marlatt. For Brass Quintet. Brass Ensemble - Quintet; Masterworks. Eighth Note Publications. Trumpet feature. Classical. Duration 00:03:00. Published by Eighth Note Publications (AP.81-BQ9616). The arrangement of this piece, earlier released by Eighth Note Publications, proved to outsell all others. It's popularity has caused a demand by students in mid high school to have an arrangement of this same piece that is more approachable by them. The result is this arrangement, which has been transposed into B-flat concert. This allows the top notes in the solo trumpet part to be high Cs as opposed to the more advanced version that required high Fs from the first trumpet player. None of the melodic material has been sacrificed but the technique and range requirements in all the parts is such that a high school ensemble could tackle this arrangement as a showpiece for the first trumpeter.
