Limehouse Blues by Phil Kelly. For big band. Medium to difficult. Score and parts. Published by Walrus Music Publishing (WA.56415). Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me by Adrien Re. For jazz ensemble. This edition: Trumpet range to F#6. 12/8 Groove, Blues, Jazz, Medium, Swing. Level 4. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.1746). (Level III) This Duke Ellington classic starts off with a big ensemble tutti at a moderately slow swing. The melody is punctuated by interesting ensemble hits and fresh chord substitutions during the bridge. The solo section (Trombone II and Trumpet II) follows in a 12/8 groove until the transition to a 12-bar blues featuring an alto sax solo. It romps through an exciting blues shout chorus before the return of the melody. Recently judged "Five Stars" by Frank Mantooth, Byron Stripling, and Denis DeBlasio at the Elmhurst Jazz Festival in Chicago. 8 Brass.

Henhouse by Bruce Wermuth. For jazz ensemble. This edition: Trumpet range to D6. Blues, Medium Tempo, Swing, Jazz. Level 3. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.1773). (Level III) Medium tempo, swinging blues in C with a bridge after intro (which includes trumpets crowing, then "clucking" with plunger mutes), catchy riff-like melody is stated in saxes, with written piano (could be ad-lib answers for more experienced players), then brass responses--leading to a center solo section. Changes are printed in tenor 1, trombone 2, and trumpet 2, with cued notes in each part to be played if not soloing. Driving thematic tutti writing provides a good opportunity to develop swing ensemble playing. A subsequent breakdown section provides another solo opportunity (changes provided in trumpet 2 and piano, with "clucking" and "fluttering" brass and sax background figures respectively), into a solo drum break and building to a big finish. Designed to knock the barn doors down among poultry frivolity. Sample piano comp voicing in the solo section and a written bass line throughout make this piece suitable for high school and college bands with less experienced rhythm sections as well as more advanced groups wanting a fun piece that swings hard. 8 Brass.

Teach Me Tonight by Jack Cooper. For jazz ensemble (with vocal solo). This edition: Trumpet range to E6. Blues. Level 4. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.2005). (8 Brass) Slower Basie-style vocalist feature that starts with just the singer and bass. Commissioned by Kenton reed sideman and vocalist, Tony Campise. Very bluesy writing with the alto sax featured soloist much like the writing for Sammy Davis Jr. or Joe William with the Basie Band. Modulation moving up builds the chart to 'splanky' Basie ending. Two Views Of The Blues by Neal Finn. For jazz ensemble. This edition: Trumpet range to E6. Ballad. Level 5. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.449). (8-10 Brass) One of my best; actually two charts in one. May be performed as one composition with two sections or either "view" can be performed as an individual piece. A celebration of the Ellington tradition. View 1 is a lush, romantic ballad a la Warm Valley. View 2 is a good old back beat shuffle a la Things Ain't What They Used To Be. View 1 features bari solo in the style of Harry Carney. Difficult, but playable sax soli makes use of double time feel. Extended piano solo opens the piece, which has a beautiful melody. View 2 has tricky head with triplet rhythms that will drive you crazy. Solos for trumpet and trombone can be opened. Some Ellington plunger mute effects. Ends with a Cat Anderson style lead trumpet chorus. Worth the effort.

Hang Time by Antonio Garcia. For jazz ensemble (trombone section feature). This edition: Trumpet range to E6. Blues. Level 5. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.514). (Level V) Get your trombone section to "hang out" in the practice room on this five-bone section feature. The trombones deliver the tune in harmony, play a brief soli, and the band sends off the soloists. Fourth trombone solos over G and Gm blues, third over G blues. Fifth trombone plays a "walking bass" written solo line under an A blues woodwind soli, then the first and second trombones trade fours over an A minor and G blues. The band briefly recaps, and the trombones close the tune with flair. Alto I doubles flute; Alto II and Tenors double clarinet; Bari doubles Bass Clarinet. An optional trumpet part extends the range to A6. 9 Brass.

Traditions by Richard Lawn. For big band (woodwind doubles). This edition: Trumpet range to Eb6. Blues, Slow, Jazz, Swing, Medium. Level 3. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.681). (Level III) Clever arranging and tasteful orchestration give this "ensemble feature" a fresh yet traditional look at swing. An introduction marked by interesting bass, trombone and brush work gives way to a light two beat presentation of the head before settling into a moderate tempo straight-ahead groove. The ensemble gets a chance to show its teeth as the piece half-times into a slow, hard bluesy feel and a brief stop time section en route to the original tempo and a great ending. Brief solos for soprano, bari and piano. Alto I-sop., Alto II, Ten. I & II-fl., Bari-fl./picc. 8 Brass.

Red With Blue Accents by Bert Ligon. For jazz ensemble (solos for trombone and trumpet). This edition: Trumpet range to D6. Blues, Waltz, Latin, Jazz, Swing, Medium. Level 5. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.700). (Level V) This is what you get when you mix blues with a Latin feel. The fast waltz begins and ends in 4/4, yet feels just right. Trombone and trumpet play the line in octaves. Two choruses of ensemble build to a rhythmically exciting kick off to the trombone solo. The ensemble returns as a transition to the trumpet solo. The band metrically modulates to a slower 4/4 as a change of pace from the fast 3/4 and shifts back to the fast waltz in the middle of the trumpet solo. Then, the band overlaps the last trumpet solo and returns to the original theme. The two soloists trade eights at the end before a climax in 4/4. A final chord is like an afterglow, hangover heat remaining after the burning chart. 8 Brass.
