Red With Blue Accents by Bert Ligon. For jazz ensemble (solos for trombone and trumpet). This edition: Trumpet range to D6. Blues, Waltz, Latin, Jazz, Swing, Medium. Level 5. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.700). (Level V) This is what you get when you mix blues with a Latin feel. The fast waltz begins and ends in 4/4, yet feels just right. Trombone and trumpet play the line in octaves. Two choruses of ensemble build to a rhythmically exciting kick off to the trombone solo. The ensemble returns as a transition to the trumpet solo. The band metrically modulates to a slower 4/4 as a change of pace from the fast 3/4 and shifts back to the fast waltz in the middle of the trumpet solo. Then, the band overlaps the last trumpet solo and returns to the original theme. The two soloists trade eights at the end before a climax in 4/4. A final chord is like an afterglow, hangover heat remaining after the burning chart. 8 Brass.

Henhouse by Bruce Wermuth. For jazz ensemble. This edition: Trumpet range to D6. Blues, Medium Tempo, Swing, Jazz. Level 3. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.1773). (Level III) Medium tempo, swinging blues in C with a bridge after intro (which includes trumpets crowing, then "clucking" with plunger mutes), catchy riff-like melody is stated in saxes, with written piano (could be ad-lib answers for more experienced players), then brass responses--leading to a center solo section. Changes are printed in tenor 1, trombone 2, and trumpet 2, with cued notes in each part to be played if not soloing. Driving thematic tutti writing provides a good opportunity to develop swing ensemble playing. A subsequent breakdown section provides another solo opportunity (changes provided in trumpet 2 and piano, with "clucking" and "fluttering" brass and sax background figures respectively), into a solo drum break and building to a big finish. Designed to knock the barn doors down among poultry frivolity. Sample piano comp voicing in the solo section and a written bass line throughout make this piece suitable for high school and college bands with less experienced rhythm sections as well as more advanced groups wanting a fun piece that swings hard. 8 Brass.

Blue Units by Chuck Dotas. For jazz ensemble. This edition: Trumpet range to C6. Blues. Level 3. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.391). (8 Brass) Blue Units was commissioned by John Harmon and the Wisconsin State High School Honors Jazz Ensemble. Plenty of Bb blues solo space is available for any instrument, and an optional guitar solo over a G7 vamp provides an opportunity for those guitarists more experienced in rock environments to solo comfortably. The arrangement, written in a contrapuntal style reminiscent of Bill Holman, features some unusual formal twists, as well as a fake ending. This piece works well with high school and young university groups.

Shake Out All Those Blues by Clare Fischer. For jazz choir (SATBB choir with rhythm section). Funk, Blues, Odd Meter. Level 5. Set of 16 octavos with rhythm parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.VJ476). As much of an instrumental feature as it is a vocal feature, for this tune Fischer took the first seven notes of the theme from Igor Stravinsky's History of the Soldier and turned it into a funky blues with some odd meter sections. Don't even try to imagine how it would sound from this description - it has to be heard to be believed! SATBB with rhythm section.

Central City Blues/Hello [Central City Sketches #1/2] by The American Jazz Orchestra. Edited by Jeffrey Sultanof and Rob DuBoff. Arranged by Benny Carter. For big band. Swing. Medium. Score and parts. Published by Jazz Lines Publications (JL.JLP-8286-87). In 1987, Benny Carter was invited to give a concert of his music with the American Jazz Orchestra. The concert would be a career retrospective: classic music he wrote in the 1930s and '40s, compositions from the '60s, including themes he'd written for motion pictures, and a suite composed specifically for the concert. This suite, Central City Sketches, and the resulting studio-recorded CD released by Musicmasters, were praised by critics who were thrilled that Carter was still creating beautiful, swinging music at the age of eighty. Jeffrey Sultanof was present at that concert, and can attest that the audience went wild when they heard this new music that often recalled Kansas City and the swing era. The sources for these publications are the original parts, which were heavily marked up with changes and corrections that were made prior to the premiere. In one case (People Time) a score that was engraved by Phil Woods was consulted. Movements 1 and 2 - Central City Blues segue to Hello: The suite opens with Central City Blues which segues into a Basie-styled Hello. Because the blues cannot be played as a separate composition, it is combined with Hello. Central City Blues has been marked as "low-down and dirty" by the editor, and that's exactly how it ought to be played. A piano solo and a change of tempo brings us to Hello, which is Carter's homage to his friend Count Basie. Carter is quite specific about dynamics here, and they should be observed.

The Outback Blues by Gordon Goodwin. For big band. Medium to difficult. Score and parts. Published by Walrus Music Publishing (WA.56194). Commissioned by the Elko High School Jazz Ensemble, Walt Lowell, director, this is a bluesy shuffle with a quirky twist. The melodies are full of half-step intervals, which are intended to convey a little edge, so don't be shy play 'em like you mean it! The ensemble also has many dotted eight/sixteenth note rhythms if you play these nice and tight it will help propel the shuffle groove. This chart is a great vehicle to feature a number of your best soloists who can resist blowing on blues in F, even if it is a 16 bar chorus? This chart is lots of fun, not too difficult and makes for a spirited opener or set closer. No sax doubles, lead trumpet high note is written F. Lead trombone high note is A.5 Saxes (A,A,T,T,B),4 Trumpets, 4 Trombone (4th = bass trombone),p/g/b/d, percussion (Vibes).
