A Minor Excursion by David Caffey. For jazz ensemble (piano and tenor saxophone solos). This edition: Trumpet range to E6. Medium Blues. Level 4. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.2296). (Level IV) This swinging chart is especially fun for the trombone section! Mithril by Rolf Johnson. For big band (flugelhorn and alto saxophone solos). This edition: Trumpet range to F#6. Blues, Up Tempo, Jazz. Level 5. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.636). (Level V) A slow, misterioso, quasi-legit intro gives way to up-tempo blues featuring alto and flugel. After the flugel solos, the band uses fugal techniques and shifting meters to build to a huge climax after which the tempo halves to a relaxed swing and an alto solo takes it home. Features an added section of four horns, as well as four flutes (one doubling piccolo, two doubling clarinet) in the woodwind section. 8 Brass plus 4 horns.

High And Outside by Bert Ligon. For jazz ensemble (trumpet solo). This edition: Trumpet range to D6. Blues, Up Tempo, Jazz, Swing, Contemporary, Minor Blues. Level 4. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.694). (Level IV) Burning, contemporary minor blues. The head is not over standard blues changes, and the melody occasionally blurs the distinction between major and minor. Parallel voicings and energy give this chart a contemporary edge. A contrapuntal section follows the head and leads to the first solo by alto 1. A soli is developed over the ostinato using material from the head and first developmental section. The lines develop rhythmically and melodically playing against and then with the ostinato. Finally, the rhythm section breaks the ostinato, and the soli plays another chorus over a swing feel. A trumpet solo follows, and then the main theme is stated in a new setting. Trumpet range is D6, but could play F6, G6 or A6 for a climatic ending! 8 Brass.

Stevie Played The Blues by Bert Ligon. For jazz ensemble. This edition: Trumpet range to D6. 12/8 Groove, Jazz, Shuffle. Level 4. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.705). (Level IV) A 12/8 shuffle with a touch of R & B and jazz. The "Stevie" is Steve Ray Vaughn, from whom the groove was borrowed. The solo section could feature guitar or tenor saxophone with backgrounds in the style. After the solos, there is an exciting ensemble section without rhythm section, where the horns are pitted against the baritone sax. The ranges are all within a high school level, with optional 8va sections cued in the lead trumpet. 8 Brass.

Dem Brine Shrimp That Ate Salt Lake City Blues arranged by Henry Wolking. For big band. Medium - difficult. Score and parts. Published by Walrus Music Publishing (WA.52476). The title is derived from a campy indie horror spoof flick about giant brine shrimp attacking Salt Lake City in the mid sixties. It was a Utah thing but I loved the imagery of bluesy brine shrimp on the march. This Ellington-ish medium blues chart marches to its own beat with a straight-ahead melody preceded and followed by solos with cool riffs and big shout choruses. Challenging, but basically melodic and straight-ahead. I featured this chart in 2010 at the Shanghai World Exposition with the University of Utah Jazz Band 1, and the Chinese audiences ate it up. Soloists: piano, tenor sax, trumpet.Trpt. 1 to written high C.5/44G/P/B/D.

If you have the horses, let 'em run with this churnin', burnin' swing monster from Maynard's big band album, 'Big Bop Nouveau.'
