Red With Blue Accents by Bert Ligon. For jazz ensemble (solos for trombone and trumpet). This edition: Trumpet range to D6. Blues, Waltz, Latin, Jazz, Swing, Medium. Level 5. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.700). (Level V) This is what you get when you mix blues with a Latin feel. The fast waltz begins and ends in 4/4, yet feels just right. Trombone and trumpet play the line in octaves. Two choruses of ensemble build to a rhythmically exciting kick off to the trombone solo. The ensemble returns as a transition to the trumpet solo. The band metrically modulates to a slower 4/4 as a change of pace from the fast 3/4 and shifts back to the fast waltz in the middle of the trumpet solo. Then, the band overlaps the last trumpet solo and returns to the original theme. The two soloists trade eights at the end before a climax in 4/4. A final chord is like an afterglow, hangover heat remaining after the burning chart. 8 Brass.

High And Outside by Bert Ligon. For jazz ensemble (trumpet solo). This edition: Trumpet range to D6. Blues, Up Tempo, Jazz, Swing, Contemporary, Minor Blues. Level 4. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.694). (Level IV) Burning, contemporary minor blues. The head is not over standard blues changes, and the melody occasionally blurs the distinction between major and minor. Parallel voicings and energy give this chart a contemporary edge. A contrapuntal section follows the head and leads to the first solo by alto 1. A soli is developed over the ostinato using material from the head and first developmental section. The lines develop rhythmically and melodically playing against and then with the ostinato. Finally, the rhythm section breaks the ostinato, and the soli plays another chorus over a swing feel. A trumpet solo follows, and then the main theme is stated in a new setting. Trumpet range is D6, but could play F6, G6 or A6 for a climatic ending! 8 Brass.

Traditions by Richard Lawn. For big band (woodwind doubles). This edition: Trumpet range to Eb6. Blues, Slow, Jazz, Swing, Medium. Level 3. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.681). (Level III) Clever arranging and tasteful orchestration give this "ensemble feature" a fresh yet traditional look at swing. An introduction marked by interesting bass, trombone and brush work gives way to a light two beat presentation of the head before settling into a moderate tempo straight-ahead groove. The ensemble gets a chance to show its teeth as the piece half-times into a slow, hard bluesy feel and a brief stop time section en route to the original tempo and a great ending. Brief solos for soprano, bari and piano. Alto I-sop., Alto II, Ten. I & II-fl., Bari-fl./picc. 8 Brass.

Take No Prisoners by Richard Lawn. For big band (woodwind doubles). This edition: Trumpet range to E6. Blues, Up Tempo, Jazz, Latin, Swing, Minor Blues. Level 4. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.680). (Level IV) This high energy Latin/swing chart combines lots of counterpoint with forceful tutti-brass chords. An extended minor blues serves as the harmonic basis for the head and the alto solo before the tutti ensemble trades fours with the drums and congas. Recorded on the University of Texas' Sublime in Time. Alto II, Ten. II, & Bari-clar., Ten. I-fl. Optional vibes and tuba. 8 Brass.

Home Of The Whopper by Malcolm Baker. For jazz ensemble (tenor saxophone solo). This edition: Trumpet range to E6. 12/8 Groove, Jazz, Bitonal, Blues. Level 4. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.64). (Level IV) As greasy as it sounds, Home of the Whopper is a 12/8 bitonal blues with an attitude. Solos for tenor saxophone, can be opened (I suggest guitar if you've got a real rocker in the band). Hints of Thad Jones' classic Us in the shout chorus. A great opener or closer to let your band wail. 9 Brass.

Partin' Shots by Antonio Garcia. For big band. This edition: Trumpet range to F6. Blues. Level 5. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.516). (Level V) Blues, quarter note = 112. Commissioned by the Rob Parton JazzTech Big Band for its debut compact disk (Sea Breeze SB CD-112), this Monk-ish blues begins with open piano and bass solos. Flute and muted trumpet carry the tune over a two-feel, repeated by the trombones as the ensemble answers. A four-voice trumpet soli swings into an open trombone solo. Backgrounds build to a shout, the piano recaps the quirky melody, and the band tags it to end. If you've got the players, this chart will excite the blues groove of your band. Alto I doubles on flute. 8 Brass.

The trombones deliver the tune in harmony, play a brief soli, and the band sends off the soloists. Fourth trombone solos over G and Gm blues, third over G blues. Fifth trombone plays a "walking bass" written solo line under an A blues woodwind soli, then the first and second trombones trade fours over an A minor and G blues. The band briefly recaps, and the trombones close the tune with flair. Alto I doubles flute; Alto II and Tenors double clarinet; Bari doubles Bass Clarinet. Two Views Of The Blues by Neal Finn. For jazz ensemble. This edition: Trumpet range to E6. Ballad. Level 5. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.449). (8-10 Brass) One of my best; actually two charts in one. May be performed as one composition with two sections or either "view" can be performed as an individual piece. A celebration of the Ellington tradition. View 1 is a lush, romantic ballad a la Warm Valley. View 2 is a good old back beat shuffle a la Things Ain't What They Used To Be. View 1 features bari solo in the style of Harry Carney. Difficult, but playable sax soli makes use of double time feel. Extended piano solo opens the piece, which has a beautiful melody. View 2 has tricky head with triplet rhythms that will drive you crazy. Solos for trumpet and trombone can be opened. Some Ellington plunger mute effects. Ends with a Cat Anderson style lead trumpet chorus. Worth the effort.

Blue Units by Chuck Dotas. For jazz ensemble. This edition: Trumpet range to C6. Blues. Level 3. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.391). (8 Brass) Blue Units was commissioned by John Harmon and the Wisconsin State High School Honors Jazz Ensemble. Plenty of Bb blues solo space is available for any instrument, and an optional guitar solo over a G7 vamp provides an opportunity for those guitarists more experienced in rock environments to solo comfortably. The arrangement, written in a contrapuntal style reminiscent of Bill Holman, features some unusual formal twists, as well as a fake ending. This piece works well with high school and young university groups.

Got A Grip by Chris Culver. For jazz ensemble. This edition: Trumpet range to F#6. Blues. Level 4. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.382). (Level IV) Your basic shuffle blues with a tenor soli and some things for the ensemble, too. After the solo, a unison line starts in the rhythm section, then bones, then trumpets (a la Catingub's Blues and the Abscessed Tooth). This leads into a sax soli, followed by a rousing shout chorus, and leads to a climax with a modulation. No doubles. 9 Brass.
