Blues In Hoss' Flat (Blues In Frankie's Flat) by Frederick "Dave" Snider. For little big band. Little Big Band Charts. Medium difficult. Score and parts. Published by Walrus Music Publishing (WA.60179). This is a medium shuffle blues (quarter note=132) in D-flat, originally scored by Frank Foster for the Basie Orchestra. It has now been reduced for a little big band--- (2tpt, 1t-bone, 3saxes, and rhythm section, p-b-d-g). There are a few things that must be pointed out. The lead tpt lines and most of the other lead lines are still in tact. There are some trombone and sax section parts that are rescored in the piano and guitar parts. All Mr. Foster's expression, dynamic marks, etc. are all the same. Don't get scared by a few of these changes because this chart still swings like crazy and is a definite crowd-pleaser even in this new format. Trumpet Highest note Eflat5. Featured soloists---trumpet, trombone, tenor sax, and piano. Instrumentation: two trumpets, one trombone, one alto, one tenor, one baritone. Rhythm: piano, bass, drums, and guitar. No Doubles.

Central City Blues/Hello [Central City Sketches #1/2] by The American Jazz Orchestra. Edited by Jeffrey Sultanof and Rob DuBoff. Arranged by Benny Carter. For big band. Swing. Medium. Score and parts. Published by Jazz Lines Publications (JL.JLP-8286-87). In 1987, Benny Carter was invited to give a concert of his music with the American Jazz Orchestra. The concert would be a career retrospective: classic music he wrote in the 1930s and '40s, compositions from the '60s, including themes he'd written for motion pictures, and a suite composed specifically for the concert. This suite, Central City Sketches, and the resulting studio-recorded CD released by Musicmasters, were praised by critics who were thrilled that Carter was still creating beautiful, swinging music at the age of eighty. Jeffrey Sultanof was present at that concert, and can attest that the audience went wild when they heard this new music that often recalled Kansas City and the swing era. The sources for these publications are the original parts, which were heavily marked up with changes and corrections that were made prior to the premiere. In one case (People Time) a score that was engraved by Phil Woods was consulted. Movements 1 and 2 - Central City Blues segue to Hello: The suite opens with Central City Blues which segues into a Basie-styled Hello. Because the blues cannot be played as a separate composition, it is combined with Hello. Central City Blues has been marked as "low-down and dirty" by the editor, and that's exactly how it ought to be played. A piano solo and a change of tempo brings us to Hello, which is Carter's homage to his friend Count Basie. Carter is quite specific about dynamics here, and they should be observed.

Mojo Blues by Eric Richards. For jazz ensemble. This edition: Trumpet range to Eb6. Blues, Half-Time feel, Funk, Jazz, Modern. Eric Richards Series. Level 4. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.1109). (9 Brass) (Level 4) This chart is a blues, but one firmly rooted in the nineties. The range demands are not too difficult for the brass, but some of the rhythmic figures and the overall concept of the feel make this chart somewhat challenging. The feel should have a hint of half time funk, but the electric bass should be walking in 4 for most of the time. This kind of groove is used quite a bit by the Yellowjackets. The open solo section can feature trumpet, alto, guitar, or keyboard (ideally synthesizer). No doubles (soprano sax lead).

Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.1725). (8 Brass) A soulful, bluesy composition written in the style of jazz legend, Charles Mingus. The slow groove and 12/8 feel of the tune are reminiscent of Mingus' classic Goodbye Pork Pie Hat. The arrangement features call and response figures between sections of the band and solos for tenor saxophone and bass. Playable by advance high school or college jazz ensembles. Written for eight brass, five saxophone (with soprano lead), piano, bass and drums.
