A Minor Excursion by David Caffey. For jazz ensemble (piano and tenor saxophone solos). This edition: Trumpet range to E6. Medium Blues. Level 4. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.2296). (Level IV) This swinging chart is especially fun for the trombone section! There are several good melodic lines for the trombones, including a chorus of minor blues in the middle with the main melody in an a cappella setting. Yes, it's exposed, but very playable and rewarding for the performers. Solos are for piano and tenor sax. 8 Brass.

La Verne City Blues by Brian Owen. For jazz ensemble (tenor saxophone, trumpet and trombone solos). This edition: Trumpet range to G5. Blues. Level 3. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.2367). (Level III) La Verne City Blues, by Brian Owen, is an excellent blues vehicle for younger band. Intended as a chart for Middle and Junior High School bands, it provides a chance to feature the soloists of the band. A great little march section leads into the solo section where your tenor 1, trumpet 1, and trombone 1 can be featured. A challenging but rewarding shout section follows the solos. Lots of opportunity to provide excitement throughout this chart! 8 Brass - Rhythm Section parts written out.

Blues on Hawthorn Road by Dan Keberle. For big band. This edition: Trumpet range to C6. Blues. Level 4. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.2403). (Level IV) Blues on Hawthorne Road is an original by Dan himself in the style of Count Basie to offer genuine big band music most suitable for advanced high school and college bands. This F blues features a simple but memorable melody supported by a swing shuffle feel, an absolutely essential style to be known in jazz repertoire. Two "sparse" choruses feature fragments of themes and motifs between sections, then a solo section backed by bluesy background figures, followed by an exciting shout chorus. Hawthorne Road is the home of Whitworth University's Music Department in Spokane, Washington. 8 Brass.

Blue Units by Chuck Dotas. For jazz ensemble. This edition: Trumpet range to C6. Blues. Level 3. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.391). (8 Brass) Blue Units was commissioned by John Harmon and the Wisconsin State High School Honors Jazz Ensemble. Plenty of Bb blues solo space is available for any instrument, and an optional guitar solo over a G7 vamp provides an opportunity for those guitarists more experienced in rock environments to solo comfortably. The arrangement, written in a contrapuntal style reminiscent of Bill Holman, features some unusual formal twists, as well as a fake ending. This piece works well with high school and young university groups.

High And Outside by Bert Ligon. For jazz ensemble (trumpet solo). This edition: Trumpet range to D6. Blues, Up Tempo, Jazz, Swing, Contemporary, Minor Blues. Level 4. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.694). (Level IV) Burning, contemporary minor blues. The head is not over standard blues changes, and the melody occasionally blurs the distinction between major and minor. Parallel voicings and energy give this chart a contemporary edge. A contrapuntal section follows the head and leads to the first solo by alto 1. A soli is developed over the ostinato using material from the head and first developmental section. The lines develop rhythmically and melodically playing against and then with the ostinato. Finally, the rhythm section breaks the ostinato, and the soli plays another chorus over a swing feel. A trumpet solo follows, and then the main theme is stated in a new setting. Trumpet range is D6, but could play F6, G6 or A6 for a climatic ending! 8 Brass.

South Carolina Blue Law by Bert Ligon. For jazz ensemble. This edition: Trumpet range to D6. Blues, Up Tempo, Jazz, Swing, Medium. Level 3. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.702). (Level III) I often joke about the law that requires a jazz band to play at least one blues tune per concert (in F or Bb), in order for it to officially be a jazz concert. Here's the chart needed to round out a concert. Plenty of room for solos with options for backgrounds. Works at just about any tempo from medium to fast. 8 Brass.

Stevie Played The Blues by Bert Ligon. For jazz ensemble. This edition: Trumpet range to D6. 12/8 Groove, Jazz, Shuffle. Level 4. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.705). (Level IV) A 12/8 shuffle with a touch of R & B and jazz. The "Stevie" is Steve Ray Vaughn, from whom the groove was borrowed. The solo section could feature guitar or tenor saxophone with backgrounds in the style. After the solos, there is an exciting ensemble section without rhythm section, where the horns are pitted against the baritone sax. The ranges are all within a high school level, with optional 8va sections cued in the lead trumpet. 8 Brass.

Slinky by Chris Merz. For big band (optional piccolo). This edition: Trumpet range to D6. Blues. Level 3. Score and set of parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.940). (Level III) This medium-tempo blues features linear writing in all parts built over a slippery melody introduced by bass and piano. Dense writing in the shout section leads to a recap featuring an optional piccolo doubling of the bass melody. No doubles. 9 Brass, optional piccolo.

No More (Tears) by Cory Jones. For jazz choir (SATB choir, a cappella). Ballad, Scat, Blues. Level 4. Set of 16 octavos. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.VJ1879). This original piece is perfect for the group looking to show off their jazz style and a soloist or two. The opening and closing of this chart are in a "crunchy chord" ballad style that soon opens into a 6/8 All Blues feel. This is definitely a feature piece that could be broken into more than one solo. The scat section could and should be opened up to more than one verse. This section was originally done three times through: First as written, Second with two simultaneous scats and Third as two scats with no backgrounds. Experiment and make it your own. SATB A cappella.

Stolen Moments by Oliver Nelson. Arranged by Jennifer Barnes. For jazz ensemble (SSATBB choir with instrumental solo and rhythm section). Straight 8th (ECM), Blues. Level 3. Set of 16 octavos with instrumental parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.VJ2061). Oliver Nelson's classic minor blues composition is arranged as a trumpet feature (or any solo instrument) with lush background vocals, although several passages feature the vocals "up front" as well. Instead of the usual swing feel on this tune, there is a subtle straight eighth-note groove. The improvisation section may feature the instrumental and/or vocalists. SSATBB with instrumental solo and rhythm section.

Shake Out All Those Blues by Clare Fischer. For jazz choir (SATBB choir with rhythm section). Funk, Blues, Odd Meter. Level 5. Set of 16 octavos with rhythm parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.VJ476). As much of an instrumental feature as it is a vocal feature, for this tune Fischer took the first seven notes of the theme from Igor Stravinsky's History of the Soldier and turned it into a funky blues with some odd meter sections. Don't even try to imagine how it would sound from this description - it has to be heard to be believed! SATBB with rhythm section.
