(Level III) One of the most popular vocal jazz charts today. A bright swing with a unison beginning, going into two-part and then four-part. Shout Blues by Kerry Marsh. For jazz choir (SSATBB choir with rhythm section). This edition: Rhythm Parts Written Out. Jazz, Swing, Slow, Blues. Kerry Marsh Series. Level 3. Set of 16 octavos with rhythm parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.VJ778). Based on a concept from the John Clayton Big Band, this blues chart is all shout sections, with solo choruses in between. A great teaching tool for the blues, of course, and some pretty aggressive harmonies. This one swings slow and hard, and needs first sopranos that can wail on a few A's above the staff. Works well as a different kind of opener to a show. SSATBB with rhythm section.

Too Close For Comfort arranged by Kirk Marcy. For jazz choir (with rhythm section). Blues. Level 4. Set of 16 octavos with rhythm parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.VJ765). This arrangement is based upon Carmen McRae's recording from her "Live At Bubba's" album. It starts with vocalists accompanied by brushes, then a loose, 'two-feel' in the rhythm section. But hang on... at the midway point of the tune, a drum break kicks off a double-time section that races toward the ending, followed by a half-time 12/8 finish to this exciting arrangement.

Across The Great Divide by Rich Manners. For jazz choir (SSATBB choir with rhythm section). Gospel, Blues, Jazz. Level 4. Set of 16 octavos with rhythm parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.VJ744). A funky original for SATB and two soloists mixing jazz and gospel harmonies. After bluesy introductions by the soloist, the chorus enters with an up-tempo jazz/gospel section. The middle section is a surprising audience participation section a la Bobby McFerrin in which sections of the audience are taught riffs which become the harmonic/rhythmic accompaniment to the next choral section. The original material is brought back, and the piece ends with chorus and audience singing together in a hand-clapping finale. A fabulous closer. SSATBB with written out rhythm parts.

An arrangement of the Gene Harris original composition. The tune begins a cappella with the basses singing the bass line as played by Luther Hughes, with the rest of the choir singing the "short" chords. Shake Out All Those Blues by Clare Fischer. For jazz choir (SATBB choir with rhythm section). Funk, Blues, Odd Meter. Level 5. Set of 16 octavos with rhythm parts. Published by UNC Jazz Press (NC.VJ476). As much of an instrumental feature as it is a vocal feature, for this tune Fischer took the first seven notes of the theme from Igor Stravinsky's History of the Soldier and turned it into a funky blues with some odd meter sections. Don't even try to imagine how it would sound from this description - it has to be heard to be believed! SATBB with rhythm section.
