Stringin' the Blues by Martin Norgaard. For orchestra. FJH String Orchestra. Full set (score and parts). Score only also available: ST6119S. Grade 3.5. Score and set of parts. Composed 2006. Published by The FJH Music Company Inc (FJ.ST6119). Stringin' the Blues is a medium-slow blues swing piece. Following the standard jazz writing practices, the triplet feel is not notated but implied. This work should be played with a heavy feel, and with the rhythmic unevenness of the swing eighth-note lines exaggerated. The swing feel affects all rhythms, while the piece explores several textures. The solo sections should feature individual students. An informational sheet is included for each instrument. The soloist can choose between two approaches. The easiest is to use the same scale throughout the solo. The more advanced option requires the student to continually be aware of the 12-bar form. In performance, have students solo at the front of the stage. About FJH String Orchestra More emphasis on bow technique and independence of lines. For the accomplished middle, high school, college, or professional group. Grade 3 and up

I Be Serious 'bout Dem Blues by John Clayton. Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. Grade 5. Published by Hal Leonard (HL.7011239). There's always time for the blues. This original by John Clayton (and recorded by the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra on “Heart and Soul”) is set in a bluesy and relaxed tempo and provides lots of room for soloists to “holler” at each other. After the opening conversation between two trumpets, the sax section lays down the main theme followed by answers provided by the brass. Solos for tenor, alto, trombone, piano follow, and finally the full band takes us the rest of the way. This is a great chart to settle back on and just swing!

Tomorrow's Blues Today arranged by Frank Foster. Medium - Difficult. Published by Walrus Music Publishing (WA.51225). Tomorrow's Blues Today is a somewhat different kind of 'blues.' While it employs the normal 12-bar chorus format, it uses minor seventh chords insted of major or dominant chords in the first eight measures of the 12-bar chorus. Yet, it's not a minor blues, because it sounds major as a result of the minor 7th substitutions, which do not resolve to dominant 7th chords in II-V sequences. The only dominant 7th chord in any chorusm occurs in the 9th and 10th measures, a C7 raised 9th. Solos are for 1st Tenor and 4th Trumpet. Not a difficult chart, about a '2' or '3', "Tomorrows..." should go down smoothly in a medium swing tempo (quarterr note = 108). Trumpet 1 to double high G.
