Jazz Guitar - Jazz Blues Guitar Solos. (A Melodic Approach to Jazz). For jazz guitar. Instructional and Jazz. Instructional book. 47 pages. Published by Santorella Publications (SP.TS295). ISBN 1-58560-661-8. Instructional and Jazz. Jazz Guitar * Jazz Blues Solos by Larry McCabe published by Santorella Publications is for an experienced guitarist that has intermediate, or better, skills. The solos throughout are of performance quality and the improvisations are from a variety of standard blues tunes. Whether you are a rock, folk, country or urban blues guitarist, the solos will help you develop variety in your phrasing, improved familiarity with the fingerboard, enhanced conceptual abilities and a vastly improved ear. Two solos are written for each tune in standard notation & tablature including basic chord symbols. The first solo defines the melody, perhaps with some decoration; the second solo shows how a jazz guitarist might "stretch out" a bit over a progression. The song selections are not confined to 12-bar blues, but would all be considered "bluesy" in flavor, or at least lend them to a bluesy interpretation. The definition of "blues" is much broader among jazz musicians than it is within the narrower parameters of rock & roll or country music. The CD is recorded in stereo with the lead heard mainly on the right channel. Rhythm guitar and drums accompany the lead. Switching the balance to the left channel will reduce the lead considerably and enable you to play your own solos over the chords and accompaniment. Many jazz musicians feel that knowing a song's lyrics helps capture the proper mood. Thus, the first-verse lyrics included may help to "ring a bell" and enable you to recall a particular song. Keep in mind that lyrics, much like chords and solos, should not be considered definitive. Jazz music is rooted in folk music, therefore any tune treated as a jazz piece will naturally lend itself to many possible interpretations. Jazz Blues Solos from Santorella Publications will provide suggested ideas and an assortment of alternatives to be taken into consideration.

Guitar Artistry of Paul Geremia DVD. (Six & Twelve String Blues). By Paul Geremia. For Guitar (Fingerpicking). Concert/Documentary. Vestapol. Blues. DVD. Duration 100 minutes. Published by Grossman's Guitar Workshop (MB.13109DVD). Paul Geremia is possibly the greatest living performer of the East Coast and Texas fingerpicking and slide styles. He has been called a national treasure. John Hammond says that he'd drive a thousand miles to see Paul play. When Paul plays Leadbelly, you can close your eyes and swear that it is Leadbelly himself. These are just a few of the comments that critics and musicians have said about him. Maybe one of the reasons is that for the past 40 years, Paul has not only played the blues, but he's lived them as well; traveling across the country in an old beat-up car and crashing on friend's couches. A hard life, but simple: two guitars, four harmonicas, and a suitcase. But the details don't really matter. It's all about the music; keeping the dying ghosts of the old masters alive with love, a couple of finger picks, and an old beat-up guitar. Paul has created a style which is very much his own combining his interpretations of the music of Blind Lemon Jefferson, Robert Johnson, Blind Willie McTell, Scrapper Blackwell and Blind Blake.

Rev. Gary Davis: The Video Collection on DVD by Rev. Gary Davis. For Guitar (Flatpicking). Concert/Documentary. Vestapol. Blues. DVD. Duration 105 minutes. Published by Grossman's Guitar Workshop (MB.13111DVD). The first two tracks are taken from a short film that played in theatres in the early 1960s. This was shot while Rev. Davis lived in the Bronx. The filmmaker was very interested in the ambience but we do get a chance to see Rev. Davis play. Pete Seeger's Rainbow Quest had one show that featured Rev. Davis along with Donovan and Shawn Phillips. The next two tunes are from this program. In 1969 Rev. Davis traveled to Seattle, Washington to play for the Folkore Society. Tracks 5-12 were filmed by the Anthropology Department of the University of Washington at the home of John Ullman.. This is rough footage but shows Rev. Davis relaxed amongst friends and his trusty cigar! During that stay John was able to take Rev. Davis in to a proper television studio and tracks 15-23 are from this session. These are seminal performances. The independent filmmaker Lionel Rogosin brought Rev. Davis together with other musicians for his film Black Roots. Tracks 24-26 are from this film. This collection ends with some very rough footage from the wedding celebration of John Gibbon (one of Rev. Davis's earliest New York students). This was originally recorded on reel to reel tape and over the years the tape disintegrated. So what we have left is a faint video image with good sound that shows Rev. Davis enjoying himself at a party with friends.
