Deep Texas Blues. (The Early Blues of Lightnin' Hopkins). By Ernie Hawkins. For Guitar (Electric). Licks and Phrases. Grossman-Gtr Workshop. Blues. Beginning. DVD. Duration 186 minutes. Published by Grossman's Guitar Workshop (MB.GW828SDVD).
In this second DVD lesson devoted to the guitar playing of Lightnini Hopkins, Ernie Hawkins dives into Lightnin's early catalogue from the Aladdin and Gold Star record labels. There was an amazing variety to Lightnin's early work. Listening to his early recordings we hear an artist at his prime. He effortlessly employing widely different rhythms, keys and tunings. The deeper we listen to these songs, the deeper our insight into what a master of Texas blues Lightnin' Hopkins really was. Lightnin's style itself came along at the perfect time: the advent of the electric guitar. His style, strong rhythms punctuated by his flowing but compact lead lines created a stinging and heart-tearing evocative sound. Lightnin's guitar style and technique worked great for both the acoustic or electrical guitars. The blues of Freddy King, Albert Collins, the Vaughn brothers, Billy Gibbons, testify to the power of this style. Lightnin' connects the generations of players, starting with Blind Lemon Jefferson, for whom he was lead-boy in the early 1920s. Standing tall at the center of the Texas Blues story is Lightnini Hopkins. In this double DVD set, Ernie Hawkins covers songs in unusual keys such as: drop D(Sugar Mama), in drop D but played in the key of A (Santa Fe Blues), in G (Bad Luck and Trouble), as well as in the usual blues in A, Come Back Baby and the country gospel Needed Time in the key of E. As a bonus, Ernie teaches his version of Lightnin's Hideway, the Freddy King tune coming back home to Lightnin'. Ernie teaches phrase by phrase and then uses the split-screen so you can carefully study what each hand is doing. Detailed tab/music booklets are included as PDF files on both DVDs. 186 minutes * Level 2/3 i Detailed tab/music PDF files on the DVDs.

A Minor Case of the Birthday Blues by Lauren Bernofsky (1967-). For string orchestra. FJH String Orchestra. Full set (score and parts). Score only also available: ST6251S. Grade 3.5. Score and parts. Duration 3:15. Published by The FJH Music Company Inc (FJ.ST6251).
Even the most humbug-y of audience members will have to laugh at this new take on the traditional birthday song. After the melody is presented in a minor key, it works its way through a series of tongue-in-cheek "serious" transitions before arriving at a zany calypso setting (complete with maracas and claves!). Through all its silliness, the piece is actually a great teaching tool for many techniques your students will encounter in symphonic music, such as imitation, chromatics, tremolo, triplets, and more. Don't forget the cake!

Whistle Blues by Benny Goodman. Edited by Jeffrey Sultanof. Arranged by Mary Lou Williams. For big band (5/3/3/4). Swing. Medium. Score and parts. Published by Jazz Lines Publications (JL.JLP-8889).
Williams wrote Camel Hop and Roll 'Em for Benny Goodman while she was still with Andy Kirk’s band, and in late 1946, Williams started writing for him again. At the time, he had his own radio show with pianist Victor Borge, and in 1947, he would begin a new recording contract with Capitol Records. Goodman recorded Williams's Lonely Moments and Whistle Blues, a novelty that was recorded a few times during 1946 and 1947. Although the original parts exist for the Goodman version of Whistle Blues, we have decided to issue the stock arrangement of this piece instead. It is very similar to the recording made by Milt Orent’s orchestra for Moe Asch’s Disc label (Asch would later create the legendary Folkways label), and is a more interesting treatment of the material. The original publication has a bit of history. In 1947, Goodman’s publishing company Harman Music issued both Lonely Moments and Whistle Blues as octavo-sized stock arrangements with Goodman’s image on the cover. The copyright notices on both are credited to Harman, but this was an error. It is believed that Goodman thought that he was buying the copyrights themselves and released the stocks with that understanding, but Williams refused to sell them to him. Both publications were promptly withdrawn. I was fortunate to obtain copies of both from Gene Goodman, who ran Goodman’s publishing company (the actual owner of the company was Harry Goodman, who'd played bass for Benny during the thirties).

Teenie's Blues (Individual Arrangement from The Blues And The Abstract Truth). Edited by Rob Duboff and Jeffrey Sultanof. Arranged by Oliver Nelson. For jazz combo (alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax, trumpet, piano, bass, and drums). Swing. Medium. Score and parts. Published by Jazz Lines Publications (JL.JLP-8857).
This is one title out of 6 arrangements from the Oliver Nelson 1961 album The Blues and the Abstract Truth. In February of 1961, the sessions that later constituted the album Blues and the Abstract Truth were recorded for a new jazz label distributed by ABC-Paramount, Impulse Records. The sessions were produced by Creed Taylor, who would go on to produce classic recordings on the Verve label, and his own CTI label. Oliver Nelson had a career full of highlights by 1961. Originally from St Louis, Missouri, he had played in the bands of Louis Jordan, Louis Bellson, Erskine Hawkins, Wild Bill Davis and Quincy Jones. He had also been a house arranger at the legendary Apollo Theatre in Harlem in New York City. Nelson had made some albums under his own name as well. But it was this album that became his first masterpiece. An all-star ensemble was assembled: with Nelson were Freddie Hubbard, Eric Dolphy, George Barrow, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, and Roy Haynes. One of the compositions on the album became a standard: Stolen Moments. The album received ecstatic reviews from the jazz press and has rarely been out of print since it’s original release. Nelson went from success to success, making big band and small group albums in a variety of settings under his own name and accompanying jazz and pop artists. He composed symphonic music as well, and toured extensively even after he moved to Los Angeles in 1967 and became established in the film and television world. He also gave workshops and seminars. He was only 43 when he died in 1975. Thanks to an agreement with Oliver Nelson, Jr, this item is now available, edited using Nelson’s original manuscripts. Nelson now joins the legendary names whose music is now available from Jazz Lines Publications. This item is arranged for alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones, trumpet, piano, bass, and drums.

Devil Got my Woman - Blues at Newport 1966. For Guitar (Fingerpicking). Solos. Vestapol. Blues. Intermediate. DVD. Duration 60 minutes. Published by Grossman's Guitar Workshop (MB.13049DVD).
Imagine you've stumbled into a juke joint where the mentor of Robert Johnson, Son House, and the idol of the Rolling Stones, Howlin' Wolf, "dis" one another. Picture a place where Wolf taunts Bukka White while the robust Parchman Farm alumnus spins his proto-funk dance grooves and the spectral Skip James weaves his haunting Devil Got My Woman. It's an archetypal blues "crossroads" where legends of the 1920s Delta and 1950s Chicago share the same musical space, suspended out of time in a super-real present, a non-specific "bluestime." This is no fantasy. You enter this very juke joint in this video of extraordinarily powerful footage Alan Lomax captured during the 1966 Newport Folk Festival. Devil Got My Woman is not, however, concert footage from Newport. Alan Lomax recreated a juke joint at Newport, stocked the bar, and let nature take its course. The resultant film footage captures the blues experience in its first and truest milieu, one in which African-American men and women drink, dance, and share their troubles and triumphs. Brooding faces absorbing the wailing pleas of Son House and rubber-legged dancers strutting to Bukka's buoyant blues are as much a part of the mise-en-scene as the legendary principals of the cast. A 30-page booklet featuring biographical material, rare photographs, and details on the tunes performed on this DVD can be accessed and downloaded from guitarvideos.com.

Lightnin' Hopkins Rare Performances 1960-1979 by Lightnin' Hopkins. For Guitar (Electric). Concert/Documentary. Vestapol. Blues. DVD. Duration 58 minutes. Published by Grossman's Guitar Workshop (MB.13022DVD).
Texas has given the world generations of extraordinary blues singer-guitarists, of whom none made a deeper impression than Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins (1912-1982). The stunning impact of his charismatic performances comes fully to lie in this DVD tracing Lightnin's career subsequent to his rediscovery in 1959. In 1960 German filmmaker Dietrich Wawzyn captured Lightnin' on his Houston home turf, and the clips here of him performing on the street and in a Houston bar are rare glimpses into his milieu (and the earliest known footage of Hopkins). Seven years later, a relaxed Lightnin' delivered engaging folk-blues performances for Seattle folklorists, five of which appear here. In 1970 he painted a masterful and entertaining musical self-portrait in eight songs from the Los Angeles PBS show Boboquivari. Finally, Lightnin's "lion in winter" appearance on Austin City Limits in 1979 shows a still-powerful country bluesman disproving the old dog/new tricks adage with a Stratocaster and wah-wah pedal! A 28-page booklet featuring biographical material, rare photographs, and details on the tunes can be downloaded from guitarvideos.com.

Legends of Country Blues Guitar Volume 2. For Guitar (Fingerpicking). Concert/Documentary. Vestapol. Blues. DVD. Duration 60 minutes. Published by Grossman's Guitar Workshop (MB.13016DVD).
The blues "rediscovery" era of the 1960s brought to concert and sound stages many veteran artists who had participated in the "Golden Age" of country blues recording prior to World War II. The best of them retained much of their youthful power and brought with them the authority of experience. While these artists have since passed on, their record legacy is enhanced by these extraordinary performance clips. The first generation of recorded Delta bluesmen--Charley Patton, Tommy Johnson, and Mississippi Sheiks--is echoed in the stark and powerful performances of Bukka White, Sam Chatmon, Big Joe Williams, Houston Stackhouse and Son House. The East Coast ragtime style is exemplified by its supreme exponent, Reverend Gary Davis, seen here in some recently discovered informal footage. Huddie Ledbetter was a tradition unto himself with his repertoire of work and "play party" songs reflecting pre-blues African-American music idioms. The extraordinary color footage of LeadBelly singing three songs, and the informal footage of him singing Goodnight Irene to his wife Martha, are a treasure for fans of this American folk giant. Collectively the performers presented here are an extraordinary group, keepers of bygone traditions whose legacies still resonate. A 16-page comprehensive booklet featuring biographical material, photographs and details on the tunes performed on this DVD may be accessed and downloaded at guitarvideos.com.

Freddie King - The Beat 1966. For Guitar (Electric). Concert/Documentary. Vestapol. Rock & Blues. DVD. Duration 60 minutes. Published by Grossman's Guitar Workshop (MB.13014DVD).
Freddie King, hard-driving and perhaps driven, was only 42 when he died on December 28, 1976. The intensity of the performances in this video suggest an artist who burned at full throttle every time he played. Guitarists as diverse as Eric Clapton, Michael Bloomfield, and Jerry Garcia have cited King as a formative influence. Most of the clips in this collection come from a unique time warp, a fleeting moment when Southern R&B collided with mid-60's "Mod" and rendered a show called THE!!!!BEAT. THE!!!!BEAT'S 26-show run in 1966 may have been ahead of its time. The time is one when television programming for black audiences was otherwise nonexistent and blues remained a powerful force in Southern black popular music. Freddie King was 31 at the time of THE!!!BEAT, playing and singing in prime form. This video/DVD collection presents all of Freddie King's appearances from this unique series. The presentation concludes with three tunes performed in Sweden in 1973 and shows Freddie's artistic growth. The booklet for the DVD is not included. Running time: 60 minutes.

The music they played was alien to formula, possessing such skill and robustness as to be captivating, but few were widely known. The blues revival of the early 1960's brought many of the survivors to the forefront of traditional music. The technique of a Rev. Davis, the power of a Son House, the charm of a Mississippi John Hurt suddenly leaps into sight, becoming more tangible, more awesome and more human. The rare footage presented in this DVD is a treasure beyond imagining, drawn from a myriad of sources, depicting some of the greatest blues musicians who ever lived: Big Bill Broonzy, Mississippi John Hurt, Son House, Mance Lipscomb, Rev. Gary Davis, Robert Peter Williams, Josh White, and Brownie McGhee. 88 minutes.

Legends of Country Blues Guitar Volume 3. (Blues Up the Country). For Guitar (Slide/Bottleneck). Concert/Documentary. Vestapol. Blues. DVD. Duration 60 minutes. Published by Grossman's Guitar Workshop (MB.13037DVD).
Much of the extremely rare performance footage presented in this video has never before been publicly seen and documents the diversity of a music which was a personal as a fingerprint yet as universal as the blues itself. John Jackson, Pink Anderson, Rev. Gary Davis and the charismatic Josh White manifest different aspects of the rich Piedmont ragtime/blues tradition. In Memphis, echoes of the Mississippi Delta could be heard in the music of Furry Lewis, while the delightfully eccentric Jesse Fuller and the introspective Robert Pete Williams embody country blues which defies regional identity. A 20-page comprehensive booklet featuring biographical material, rare photographs, and details on the tunes performed on this DVD can be downloaded from guitarvideos.com.

It covers the assassination attempt on Marley's life, his exile in London, the kidnapping and decapitation of Barrett's father, and the death by gunfire of both Peter Tosh and drummer Carlton Barrett.
