Guitar Artistry of Paul Geremia DVD. (Six & Twelve String Blues). By Paul Geremia. For Guitar (Fingerpicking). Concert/Documentary. Vestapol. Blues. DVD. Duration 100 minutes. Published by Grossman's Guitar Workshop (MB.13109DVD). Paul Geremia is possibly the greatest living performer of the East Coast and Texas fingerpicking and slide styles. He has been called a national treasure. John Hammond says that he'd drive a thousand miles to see Paul play. When Paul plays Leadbelly, you can close your eyes and swear that it is Leadbelly himself. These are just a few of the comments that critics and musicians have said about him. Maybe one of the reasons is that for the past 40 years, Paul has not only played the blues, but he's lived them as well; traveling across the country in an old beat-up car and crashing on friend's couches. A hard life, but simple: two guitars, four harmonicas, and a suitcase. But the details don't really matter. It's all about the music; keeping the dying ghosts of the old masters alive with love, a couple of finger picks, and an old beat-up guitar. Paul has created a style which is very much his own combining his interpretations of the music of Blind Lemon Jefferson, Robert Johnson, Blind Willie McTell, Scrapper Blackwell and Blind Blake.

Guitar Artistry of Geoff Muldaur by Geoff Muldaur. For Guitar (Fingerpicking). Concert/Documentary. Vestapol. Blues. DVD. Duration 93 minutes. Published by Grossman's Guitar Workshop (MB.13118DVD). ISBN 9781579402068. Blues. 5.25" x 7.5" inches. Geoff Muldaur is one of the great voices and musical forces to emerge from the folk, blues and folk-rock scenes centered in Cambridge, MA and Woodstock, NY. During the 1960's and 1970's, Geoff made a series of highly influential recordings as a founding member of the Jim Kweskin Jug Band and the Paul Butterfield's Better Days group, as well as collaborations with then-wife Maria and other notables (Bonnie Raitt, Eric Von Schmidt, Jerry Garcia, etc.). In addition to tours and recording, Geoff continues to apply his arranging skills to a variety of projects for albums and film. Although he is known as a musicians musician, it is clearly his voice that most identifies him. The New York Times noted: Geoff Muldaur "...succeeds not because he copies the timbre and inflections of a down-home African American but because his voice - reedy, quavering, otherworldly - is so unusual that the music he sings becomes little more than a context, a jumping-off point." Richard Thompson's praise for him: 'There are only three white blues singers and Geoff Muldaur is at least two of them.'" In this Guitar Artistry DVD, Geoff talks about his influences as well as his approaches to arranging music to the guitar. Titles include: The Wild Ox Moan, My Tears Came Rollin' Down, Just A Little While To Stay Here, Light Rain, Fishin' Blues, Wild About My Lovin', Downtown Blues, Gee Baby (Ain't I Good To You), Chicken, Drop Down Mama, Mr. Jelly Roll Baker, I Can't See Your Face Anymore, Trouble Soon Be Over and Got to Find Blind Lemon - Part One.

Novelty Instrumentals of Rev. Gary Davis DVD by Ernie Hawkins. For Guitar (Fingerpicking). Solos. Grossman-Guitar Workshop. Blues. Intermediate-Advanced. DVD. Duration 93 minutes. Published by Grossman's Guitar Workshop (MB.GW984DVD). In this lesson Ernie Hawkins teaches three Rev. Davis arrangements that will challenge your fingers. Rev. Gary Davis's tour de force in concert was his "Soldiers March." This is a multi-part instrumental played in the Key of F and C and is a showcase in demonstrating the genius of Rev. Davis's playing and arranging skills. Few country blues guitarists played in the Key of F but Rev. Davis explored this key with religious as well as old pop standards. "Darktown Strutters Ball" is a fascinating arrangement that captures the atmosphere of the 1920s. Rev. Davis use to tell his students that playing with a bottleneck was cheating. Yet his "Whistlin' Blues" uses this technique combined with an Open D6 tuning to create an unusual boogie piano sound. Ernie Hawkins teaches each tune phrase by phrase and carefully shows you the right hand picking as well as the left hand fingerings that were unique to Rev. Davis's approach. A detailed tab/music instructional booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD. Also featured are split screen segments where each section is played slowly and you can study the movements of each hand. As a bonus we have included various audio performances of Rev. Davis playing each song.

Jackson Blues Guitars by John Miller. For Guitar (Fingerpicking). Transcribed Solos. Grossman-Gtr Workshop. Blues. Intermediate. DVD. Duration 97 minutes. Published by Grossman's Guitar Workshop (MB.GW826DVD). Jackson, Mississippi attracted a host of blues musicians in the period 1910--1940. Many players from small towns made their way to Jackson, which as the capital of Mississippi and a much larger city, held forth the promise of more and better work opportunities, and the possibility of making a living playing music rather than driving a mule or chopping cotton. The Jackson Blues scene was an unusually rich one, stylistically, spanning the gap from the sophisticated Pop blues of Bo Carter to the low-down blues of Rube Lacy and a host of players working between those two extremes. Included on this DVD are transcriptions and teaching of recorded performances from Tommy Johnson, one of the fountainheads of the Mississippi blues, Itta Bena natives Rube Lacy and Ishmon Bracey, with their distinctive vocal head tones and intense playing, the great Geeshie Wiley, a woman who played and sang as strongly as any man, Walter Vinson, guitarist and lead singer for the Mississippi Sheiks, and Bo Carter, a player with a rich chordal vocabulary and Jazzy sound. The songs presented offer a wide range of left and right hand approaches and ways of keeping time and will expand your your ability to play blues, moving far afield from the simple alternating bass. A detailed tab/music booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD, and contains all of the songs' lyrics as well as transcriptions of the guitar parts. Also included are the original source recordings from which the transcriptions taught in the lesson were taken.

The Ragtime & Blues Guitar of Blind Blake by Ari Eisinger. For Guitar (Fingerpicking). Licks and Phrases. Grossman-Gtr Workshop. Blues. Intermediate. 2-DVD Set. Duration 186 minutes. Published by Grossman's Guitar Workshop (MB.GW824SDVD). Blind Blake's recordings, made in the 1920s and 1930s, set a standard for ragtime blues guitar virtuosity that remains unmatched. His famous "double-thumb" right-hand technique is part of a syncopated sound that is unlike that of any other guitarist. His recordings, with their rhythmic drive and ingenious variations, remain a source of endless delight (as well as frustration) for today's acoustic blues guitarists. In this double DVD Ari Eisinger explains and demonstrates two key components of Blind Blake's style: his right-hand technique and his unique chord progressions. He then provides detailed demonstrations of eight of Blake's guitar breaks and accompaniments from some of his best recordings. These include the well-known songs and instrumentals Rope Stretchin' Blues and the amazing (and amazingly fast) Southern Rag, as well as the wonderful, but often overlooked, Baby Lou Blues and Tootie Blues. The lesson provides both an introduction to Blake's style and a detailed demonstration of some of his most advanced instrumental breaks. A detailed tab/music booklet is included as a PDF file on each DVD. In addition the original old recordings of all the tunes are included.
