Dedicated to St. Cairell. The Irish missionary, St Cairell, is thought to have left Iona c.600 AD. Along the route of his journey through the Highlands, he established several centres of Christianity, one such holy place being Cille Choirill in Brae Lochaber, east of Roy Bridge. The highest knoll on this site is Tom Angeal (the Hill of the Angels), an ancient burial ground, the final resting place of laity, priests and bishops of Lochaber. According to local tradition, the first recorded church on the site was built or restored by Ailean nan Creach, a fifteenth century Cameron chief, in atonement for his violent life. Over the centuries, the chapel fell into disrepair but in 1932, and again in 1991, it was restored and repaired, thanks to the generous funding provided by the descendants of Lochaber people who emigrated to Nova Scotia at the end of the nineteenth century.

Second Eve by Ola Gjeilo was commissioned by, dedicated to, and later premiered by the Riverside City College Chamber Choir and conductor John Byun in Riverside, California, Oct. 2008.
"In some of my pieces, the text is somewhat more the servant of the music than the other way around, and Second Eve is one of those works. The music is mainly inspired by a breathtaking photography taken by one of my favourite photographers, Jake Rajs, featured in the book These United States (Rizzoli). It is a picture of Alaska’s Mount McKinley, the highest mountain peak in the US, and I was looking at this photo throughout the writing process, making sure that the energy and atmosphere of the music corresponded with the feeling I got from looking at the picture.
The Sancta Maria text seemed to kind of fit into what I was looking for in this piece, expressing something mystical, and kind of regal, which Mt. McKinley is in every possible way." - Ola Gjeilo

The Glagolitic Mass, one of the 20th century masterpieces of sacred music, has a very complex genesis and constitutes an intricate editorial challenge.
The recently published scholarly-critical edition presents two different versions of the work in two separate volumes: the “September 1927” version (BA 6863) which the composer completed before the first rehearsals and subsequent premiere in Brno and the version he partly reworked for the first Prague performance in April 1928 (BA 6862). This second version was then revised further and published after Janácek’s death by Universal Edition Wien in 1930. Known as the “final authorised version”, it has been newly edited for this publication which is based on the engraver’s copy of the score prepared by Janácek’s regular copyist Václav Sedlácek.
The “final authorised version” is the significant version and most suited to performance purposes. The instrumentation is richer, it is more straightforward to rehearse and several important passages are more coherent than in the earlier version. It is the later version that is presented in the vocal score. The Old Church Slavonic text has been prepared by the slavicist Radoslav Vecerka.
Urtext edition based on volume B/5-I of the “Complete Critical Edition of the Works of Leos Janácek”

Inspired by his life-long interest in chant and choral music, Paul Mealor’s De profundis pushes the boundaries of the human voice in a style synonymous with Russian orthodox music.
In spring 2012 this piece sparked the 'Bass Hunter' competition - a world-wide talent search for the lowest human voice in existence. The note, an ‘E’ (329 Hertz), is six notes below the lowest note ever written for a choral piece (from Rachmanivov’s “Vespers” – a B flat), and a whole tone lower than the Guinness World Record-holder - a sung ‘F sharp’. The piece has since been recorded featuring the winner of the competition, Tim Storms (Decca 3709935).

A dramatic and powerful setting of an iconic text, this work opens with a homophonic passage for full choir (divisi) with wide, slow dynamic gradations and silences. Polyphonic sections alternate with further homophony; upper voices then usher in a very soft pasage over lower voice drones before a fortissimo ending derived from the work's beginning.
