Divertimenti Da Camera, Volume 3 (Bb And C Minor) - Score and parts by Giovanni Battista Bononcini (1670-1747). For Flute/Oboe and guitar (percussion). Miscellaneous Wind Music. 2 - Easy to Moderate. Score and Parts. Published by Schott Music (MM.OFB0011). Born on 18 July 1670, Giovanni Battista was the most prominent of all the Bononcinis, a family of musicians living in Modena. He studied with his father and the famous Composer of sacred music, Paolo Colonna, one of the founders of the Accademia filarmonica in Bologna, where Giovanni Battista Bononcini became a conductor at the church of S. Giovanni in Monte at the early age of 18. Rome (1692/96), Vienna (1700/11) and Berlin (1702/05) were further important stations of his musical career, which came to a climax in 1720 when he received a call to London, where he enjoyed the favour of the Duke of Marlborough. Together with Attilio Ariosti and other Italian musicians, he was soon drawn into a most bitter artistic conflict with the supporters of Handel, who was patroned by the Royal family, so that the dispute almost turned into a political affair. After 1724, Bononcini s reputation in London gradually began to wane. A most mysterious case of plagiarism which we may never get to the bottom of - he was alleged to have given a composition of Antonio Lotti s at the Academy of Ancient Music as a work of his own - proved so damaging to him that he had to leave England in the end. After this, we hear of him again in Paris, London and Vienna, in which latter city he died on 9 July 1747. Giovanni Battista Bononcini was one of the most prominent and successful operatic composers of his day. The English counted him as the leading Italian master next to Alessandro Scarlatti. Most of his instrumental works he wrote before 1700, but the Divertimenti da camera... reprinted here as a complete work carefully reproducing the notes of the first edition, were written when Bononcini was at the height of his fame and were published in 1722.
