Canon by Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706). Arranged by David Marlatt. Concert Band. Brass Band. Eighth Note Publications. Baroque. Conductor Score & Parts. Duration 00:05:30. Published by Eighth Note Publications (AP.81-BB205). ISBN 1554721229. Baroque. Canon by Johann Pachelbel is one of the most famous and recognizable pieces of classical music. The treatment of the melody in this arrangement follows a popular Baroque tradition, the concerto grosso. This technique utilizes a small group of soloists that were supported by the remainder of the ensemble. In this arrangement, the solo instruments are 2 solo cornets and 2 euphoniums which have the majority of the technically scalar passages as well as the lyrical melody line. The “chamber sound” created by this arrangement is a welcome variation from the tutti sound that is commonly found in brass band writing.

Part The First ... THOU Mastering Me God! (2010) for soprano and piano by Thomas Oboe Lee. For Piano, Voice. Baroque Period, Classical Period, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Advanced Intermediate. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.10503). Program note: Two thousand ten marks my 20th year of teaching music at Boston College, a Jesuit institute of higher learning. To celebrate this milestone I decided to set a poem by the great British Jesuit poet, Gerard Manley Hopkins. In my search for a text I came upon his monumental work, “The Wreck of the Deutschland.” The poem is in two parts. Part The First deals with faith and God. Part The Second concerns the five Franciscan nuns who perished in the sinking of the ship. I decided to set Part The First only, for soprano and piano. There are ten stanzas. Each stanza has its own musical texture and mood. 1. THOU mastering me God! 2. I did say yes 3. The frown on his face 4. I am soft sift 5. I kiss my hand 6. Not out of his bliss 7. It dates from day 8. Is out with it! 9. Be adored among men 10. With an anvil ding For Megan Stapleton ...
