George Frideric Handel: Solomon HWV 67 (McGegan). Oratoriuo in three acts by George Frideric Handel (1685-1759). For soli SATB, SATB choir (SSAATTBB), 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trombones, timpani, 2 violins, 2 violas, cello, basso continuo. CD series "Music from the Frauenkirche Dresden". German title: Solomon. Frauenkirche Dresden /McGegan. Oratorios"Music from the Frauenkirche Dresden". Level 5. 3 CDs. Language: English. Composed 1748. Duration 157 minutes. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.8324200). With Language: English. Oratorios"Music from the Frauenkirche Dresden". Solomon (1749) is among a series of masterful oratorios which Handel composed beginning in 1749. As with other Handel oratorios, although it does not refer to the political happenings, happenings of his day, this work does have a connection to his times in that Handel pays homage to a wise and religious ruler from antiquity-and in so doing, also to the golden era of England and its king, George II. With its splendidly colorful, finely balanced instrumentation, effective choral writing and virtuoso solos, Solomon displays the complete range and variety of Handel's expressive capabilities. Following its premiere in 1749, in which the oratorio was drastically shortened, a further performance took place six weeks prior to Handel's death. The recording presents the complete masterpiece on 3 SACDs, without any deletions, as Handel conceived it. This sets it apart from several previous recordings which are either abridged or have altered the sequence of the work. Handel's Solomon was recorded live in the Dresden Frauenkirche by the Handel scholar Nicholas Mc Gegan, with the Winchester Cathedral Boys Choir, the Festspiel Orchester Gottingen, as well as a highly polished ensemble of soloists, including the outstanding young altus, Tim Mead, who is outstanding on this recording.

St. John Passion (Version II). By Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Edited by Peter Wollny. For SATBB Soli, SATB Choir, 2 flutes, 2 Oboe (Oboe d'amore), 2 Oboe da caccia, Viola da gamba, 2 Violin, Viola, Basso Continuo. Stuttgart Urtext Edition. German title: Johannespassion 1725. Passions; Lent and Passiontide. Study score. Language: German/English. Composed 1725. 208 pages. Duration 120 minutes. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3124557). With Language: German/English. Passions; Lent and Passiontide. The St. John Passion ranks alongside the St. Matthew Passion, the Christmas Oratorio, the Magnificat and the B minor Mass as one of the great vocal works from Johann Sebastian Bach's Leipzig years. In contrast to his other large-scale choral works, however, Bach never gave this work a definitive final form. Rather, for every performance he substantially revised the general concept of the piece and also changed numerous details. All previous editions of the St. John Passion have combined readings from various layers of sources and thus present the work in a form which was never heard during Bach's lifetime. Consequently, the wish often expressed by conductors to perform an authentic version by Bach could not be easily achieved. The present critical, new edition of the St. John Passion fulfills this wish and for the first time makes available the complete music of the second version of the work as it was performed under Bach's direction in 1725. Since a number of movements were replaced by others, including the opening chorus, this version differs most dramatically from the "standard" version which is well known today.
