Pluto ... Lord of the Underworld (2005) for orchestra by Thomas Oboe Lee. For Orchestra. Baroque Period, Classical Period, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Advanced Intermediate. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.10580). Instrumentation: 3 flutes, piccolo 2 oboes English horn in F 2 clarinets in Bb Bass clarinet in Bb 3 bassoons 4 French horns in F 3 trumpets in Bb 3 trombones Tuba Timpani Percussion I: Xylophone, triangle Percussion II: Tom-toms, bass drum Celesta Harp Violin I Violin II Viola Cello Double bass This is a transposed score. Program Notes: When Charles Ansbacher, music director of the Boston Landmarks Orchestra, commissioned me to write “Pluto” as a grand finale for “The Planets” by Gustav Holst, I immediately thought of Pluto, the Disney character; but common sense took over when I sat down to work. So instead of Disney’s faithful dog, I gravitated to the Pluto of Roman mythology. After a long battle with the Titans, the three brothers, Zeus, Poseidon and Pluto, divided the world among themselves. Zeus had the sky; Poseidon, the sea; and Pluto, the Underworld. According to mythology, the spirits of the dead, whether good or bad, enter the Underworld. Cerberus, a vicious three-headed beast, stands guard at the entrance - preventing the living from entering the world of the dead. The movement begins with a fanfare: Cerberus at the gates of the Underworld. Then a grand waltz materializes in the bass: Pluto dances!! As the waltz fades away, a lyrical tune emerges: Persephone, the wife of Pluto, appears. The work ends with a reprise of the opening fanfare, slightly altered. ART: arias & interludes (1996) for string quartet by Thomas Oboe Lee. For String Quartet. Baroque Period, Classical Period, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Advanced Intermediate. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.10585). "PROGRAM NOTE. This work, ART: arias & interludes (1996), commissioned by the Artaria Quartet of Boston, is in five movements with connecting ""solo"" interludes featuring each member of the Quartet. Each movement attempts to evoke the personality of a stock character from the Italian commedia dell'arte all'improviso. [Curtain.] The insufferable Pulcinella is musically represented by a mad polka in the first movement. According to Stravinsky, the Pulcinella he saw, which inspired his Pergolesi-kleptomania, was ""a drunken lout whose every gesture was obscene."" The teary, sad sack Pierrot is portrayed in the Largo of the second movement. Musically, it is a lament/meditation on the tension between the major and the minor triad. Harlequin is irrepressible in his hyperactive antics in the third and quasi-scherzo middle movement. He actually tries, through pantomime, to make us believe that he can fly. And he succeeds in the end only to find himself stuck up there on the ceiling!!! The ballerina Colombine dances a delirious waltz in the fourth. Dizzy from triple and quadruple pirouettes, sometimes lop-sided and almost out-of-control, she finally sits down ... In the fifth and final movement, the old goat Pantaloon shuffles across the stage in his Turkish slippers dancing to a Latin-disco beat, and drifts off into the sunset. [Curtain.] ". Violin Sonatas, Op. 5 - Volume 1 by Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713). Edited by Bernhard Moosbauer. Arranged by Bernhard Moosbauer. For violin and basso continuo. Baroque. 5-7. Full score and 2 parts. Standard notation. 112 pages. Published by Wiener Urtext/Vienna Urtext (PR.UT050235). ISBN 978-3-85055-558-6. With Standard notation. Baroque. Arcangelo Corelli's violin sonatas op. 5 are among those works in violin literature that mark a new epoch, and until this day they have been part of the standard repertory of every violinist. Therefore it is all the more astonishing that so far there had not been any original text edition of these important works. This gap is now filled by a new two-volume edition of the Wiener Urtext edition. The text is based on the first edition which Corelli himself supervised. This edition includes the ornaments for sonatas nos. 1-6, published by Roger in Amsterdam in 1710 as well as Geminiani's ornaments for sonata no. 9. The notes on performance practice by Baroque specialist Reinhard Goebel from Cologne are useful suggestions for an appropriate interpretation.

Septem Verba Christi in Cruce (2008) for SATB a cappella chorus by Thomas Oboe Lee. For Choral. Baroque Period, Classical Period, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Advanced Intermediate. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (S0.10004). Program note: A former student of mine at Boston College contacted me this summer and asked if I would be interested in writing a choral work for her group in the Berkshires. I was at the time completing the orchestration of my Symphony No. 7 … Roman Holidays, and so was ready to do something new and different from a purely instrumental work. Having been raised a Catholic and educated at parochial schools when I was a child in Hong Kong, and also bearing in mind the fact that I now teach at a Jesuit institution, Boston College, the idea of the passion of Christ is always in the back of my mind. As a matter of fact, I have always found religious choral music to be the ideal and most transcendent way to communicate God’s words. The Seven Last Words of Christ has been done in a musical setting most famously by Franz Joseph Haydn in a wordless string quartet. Other settings include those by Heinrich Schütz, César Franck, Sofia Gubaidulina, and James McMillan. Portion of the text could also be found in the sublime St. John Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach and Passio by the contemporary Estonian composer, Arvo Pärt. The complete text in Latin of Septem Verba Christi in Cruce follows. 1. Pater, dimitte illis, quia nesciunt, quid faciunt. (Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.) 2. Hodie mecum eris in Paradiso. (This day thou shalt be with me in Paradise.) 3. Mulier, ecce filius tuus. (Woman, behold thy son.) 4. Deus meus, Deus meus, utquid dereliquisti me? (My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?) 5. Sitio. (I thirst.) 6. Consummatum est. (It is finished.) 7. In manus tuas, Domine, commendo spiritum meum. (Into thine hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.) This work is dedicated to my mother. About Digital Print Sheet Music Digital Print is printable sheet music available anytime, anywhere.
