Entrance of the Queen of Sheba (arranged for mallet ensemble and two flutes). By George Frideric Handel (1685-1759). Arranged by Brian Slawson. Percussion Ensemble. For 2 flutes, two glockenspiels, two small marimbas (4-octave), one 4.3 octave marimba (low-A), one 5-octave marimba (low C)*. *NOTE: If four marimbas aren't available these parts can be performed by sharing two marimbas (one low-A, and one low-C) (8 or 9 players). Medium. Score and parts on CD-ROM. 12 pages. Duration 2'30". Published by Tapspace Publications (TA.TSPCE-26).
After opera's decline of popularity in England during the 1730's, Handel switched to writing oratorios. These were lengthy choral works without operatic staging or scenery, his most famous being Messiah. Another such work, Solomon, brings us the Entrance of the Queen of Sheba. Written for mallet ensemble and two flutes, Queen of Sheba offers ensembles to demonstrate how well Baroque music adapts to percussion instruments. In an age where contemporary music can sometimes dominate percussion concerts, this will provide a nice contrast that not only highlights the beauty of Handel's music, but welcomes the addition of woodwinds into the mix. This arrangement of Queen of Sheba has been heard worldwide on the popular CD, Bach on Wood which helped garner Brian Slawson a Grammy nomination of "Best New Classical Artist." This piece comes with a full, bound score and includes a CD-Rom containing an audio recording and all individual parts available for printing.

The heavens laugh, the earth exults in gladness (Cantata for Easter Sunday). By Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Edited by Michael Marker. For Soli STB, Choir SSATB, Oboe, 3 trumpets, Timpani, 2 Violin, 2 Viola, Basso Continuo, [2 oboes, Taille, Bassoon]. Stuttgart Urtext editions. Score available separately - see item CA.3103100. With Language: German/English. Cantatas, Easter and Eastertide.
The words are based on the Easter Gospel, the account of the Resurrection of Jesus, which is first joyfully celebrated. Then follows a call to the faithful: every Christian must make the Resurrection a reason to renew himself spiritually, so as to complete a kind of inner Resurrection himself. For his scoring - which changed slightly from performance to performance - Bach called upon a five-part choir, three trumpets and timpani, three oboes, taille and bassoon, strings and basso continuo.

Sonata in F (for solo mallet percussion with piano accompaniment). By George Frideric Handel (1685-1759). Arranged by Brian Slawson. Mallet solo with piano accompaniment. For small marimba (4 octave), piano accompaniment. NOTE: The mallet part may also be played on xylophone or vibraphone (1 player). Percussion Solos. Medium. Score and parts on CD-ROM. 8 pages. Duration 3'30". Published by Tapspace Publications (TA.TSPCS-14).
This popular Allegro from Handel's Sonata in F Major for violin has been performed for centuries on a variety of instruments. While playing it on marimba isn't a new concept, one of the biggest challenges performers face lies within the accompaniment. In addition to the mallet-customized solo part, Slawson has created a piano arrangement that is well stylized and isn't clumsy under the fingers which these figured bass transcriptions can be known for. Ideally played on marimba with two mallets, the solo can also be played on vibraphone or xylophone while showcasing intermediate performers ability to interpret Baroque phrasings and style. As an etude or recital piece, Sonata in F will be a mainstay in any developing mallet player's repertoire. This piece comes with a full, bound score and includes a CD-Rom containing an audio recording and both the solo and accompaniment parts available for printing.
