Power Pickin' Vol. 1. (Up the Neck Backup for Bluegrass Banjo). By Bill Evans. For Banjo (5-String). Technic. Acutab. Bluegrass. Beginning-Intermediate. DVD. Duration 120 minutes. Published by Acutab Publications (MB.DBE1). A visual method for learning the basic techniques used to play bluegrass banjo accompaniment in up the neck positions. Techniques covered include: --vamping - with variations--3/4 time backup--roll patterns based on chord forms --classic backup licks--2 finger backup for slower songs --bluesy backup styles One of the most challenging skills for any banjo player is being able to accompany other musicians in a jam session or band setting. Called backup, this art of accompanying singers and other instrumentalists requires the mastery of a set of traditional banjo techniques often involving distinctive sounds and licks found higher up the banjo neck. In this Power Pickin' video from AcuTab, Bill Evans takes you through a careful description and demonstration of many important backup techniques that you can incorporate into your picking right away. Each new technique is explained in detail, using a variety of camera angles and split screen formats to show you exactly how it's done. First off, Bill shows you how to use the vamping, or chopping technique. A number of right and left hand variations are demonstrated before moving into roll oriented backup. Bill describes the use of the forward roll in closed, up the neck positions as well as the popular two finger backup techniques, sometimes called "teardrop licks." A variety of right hand patterns are taught based on the different left hand chord forms and all examples are demonstrated both alone and in a band setting, using a standard bluegrass chord progression. Lastly, Bill teaches a number of popular backup licks that will appeal to more experienced pickers and shows how to work them into a song.

Sierra Hull - Secrets Songs & Tunes by Sierra Hull and John Lawless. For Mandolin. Solos. Acutab. Bluegrass. Beginning-Intermediate. DVD. Duration 240 minutes. Published by Acutab Publications (MB.DSH1). Sierra Hull started her first year of college in 2009, and is already one of the most celebrated mandolinists in and around bluegrass music. While still in high school she released her debut CD, Secrets, on Rounder Records. On this 2-DVD set Sierra teaches the mandolin solos she plays on Secrets, plus a number of instrumentals she recorded as a pre teen. The material taught in this 2-DVD set will be within the reach of any intermediate to advanced mandolin player/student, and most new players will profit from working through these songs as well. Each is demonstrated in great detail at a slow speed, making it easy to understand. To get things started, AcuTab's John Lawless leads Sierra through a discussion about how she came to be a stunning virtuoso at such a young age, including her early influences and inspirations. The bulk of the video, however, is all music with 10 complete songs and tunes demonstrated, taken from her critically-acclaimed debut album Secrets, from Rounder Records (CDROUN0601). Sierra teaches these songs carefully and in great detail. She and John discuss each solo before it is demonstrated by an all-star band, and then she breaks it down, piece-by-piece. Even though a few of the solos are fairly difficult, the way she teaches puts them within the reach of most pickers. She goes slowly, breaking each solo into easily-digestible bits, stringing them all together in a format accessible to beginning and intermediate students.

Learning To Hear Chord Changes DVD. (Learn Bluegrass by Ear). By Murphy Henry and Red Henry. For Acoustic Instruments. Technic. Learn Bluegrass by Ear. Bluegrass. Beginning. DVD. Duration 112 minutes. Published by Murphy Method (MB.21714DVD). For banjo, mandolin, fiddle, and guitar. Taught by Murphy Henry with Red Henry. For many people, learning to hear chord changes is one of the hardest parts of learning to play bluegrass. No matter what instrument you are trying to play. And even if you hear when a chord changes, what chord does it change to? And how do you know? This brand-new DVD will help you learn to hear those chord changes! Even if you've never heard a chord change before in your life! Murphy begins with simple, well-known, two-chord songs (like Skip to My Lou) and walks you through the process step-by-step. First she sings each song while playing the guitar. Then, going through the song slowly, she demonstrates what the song would sound like if you didn't change the chord. So you can hear that it sounds "wrong." When she moves to the "right" chord (not a hard choice when you've only got two chords!), you immediately hear that the song sounds "right." And that, she says, is the process: "If it sounds wrong, it is wrong." She then demonstrates each song with banjo, mandolin, and fiddle. She does simple strums on banjo and mandolin, and "chop" chords on the fiddle. (Which she shows you.) Red Henry, Murphy's husband, helps out on guitar and mandolin. Eventually she moves to three-chord songs, using the C chord. And later, she introduces the A chord and the F chord. She points out that each of these chords has a distinctive sound, and she tries to help you hear that.
