Double Concerto for Two Trumpets by Anthony Plog. For 2 trumpets and orchestra (strings, percussion (1), harpsichord). Contemporary. Intermediate / advanced. Orchestra score. Composed 2001. Duration 13 minutes. Published by Editions BIM (ET.TP308B). The Double Concerto pays homage to the very popular trumpet Double Concerto by Antonio Vivaldi. With the exception of the addition of one percussionist and harpsichord/celesta the orchestration is exactly the same, and the Vivaldi Double Concerto is even quoted in the final bars of the work. The harmonies and themes are modern, of course, but the interplay of the soloists and the feel of the piece are similar to that of its predecessor. As such, the Double Concerto is meant to be a light and enjoyable addition to the actual repertoire of music for two trumpets and chamber orchestra.

Sonata by Charles Reskin. For trumpet (flugelhorn) and piano. Contemporary. Intermediate / advanced. Composed 2007. Duration 20 minutes. Published by Editions BIM (ET.TP289). The sonata was inspired in part by the American music, both classical and jazz, of the mid-20th century, and is an homage to the composers of that era. The two outer movements are written for Trumpet in C, and follow the general formal structure of a sonata. The first movement is in sonata-allegro form, contrasting a lyrical first theme with an agitated and chaotic second theme group. The middle movement is written for the flugelhorn, and is in the form of a very simple "lullabye" melody which evolves into a kind of "dream episode" in a lively jazz-fusion style before gradually returning to the tranquil mood of the opening. The third movement is a spirited, light-hearted rondo which conjures up images of the American West. The Sonata is dedicated to the memory of Hall Overton (1920-1972) and William Vacchiano (1912-2005).

4 Airs de Bravoure by Eugene Roy. Edited by Edoardo Torbianelli. For trumpet and piano. HKB Historic Brass Series. Romantic. Intermediate / advanced. Composed c. 1824. Published by Editions BIM (ET.TP304). In 1824, Editions Schott in Mainz (Germany) published a trumpet method by C. Eugene Roy of which Editions Bim has now printed a facsimile as Volume 1 of the HKB-Historic Brass Series (for additional details about Roy and his method, see the introductory text of the facsimile book, BIM TP276). The final pages of that method contain 4 works in the virtuoso style of the time that represent archetypical examples of such trumpet music and constitute a significant contribution to its repertoire. This practical edition renders it now possible to play these "Airs de bravoure" in concert. Edoardo Torbianelli, professor for historical keyboards at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and the Hochschule der Kunste Bern (HKB - Higher school of the Arts - both institutions in Switzerland), has reconstructed piano parts in conformity with the style of that period, inspired by the originals of Méhul, Rossini and Carafa. The trumpet part is presented here in its original version, with some brief introductions and interludes that have been added to provide rest periods from the physical challenges posed by the main body of the works. Roy, a military musician and flageolet virtuoso (an instrument similar to the recorder) has published numerous instrumental methods as well as arrangements of well-known melodies. His trumpet method introduces the natural trumpet and the "keyed trumpet" (or bugle)The four pieces included at the end of this book are evidently written for these keyed instruments and are pitched in Bb flat, thus enabling the opera arias to be played in their original keys. These pieces can today be played on trumpet, cornet or fluegelhorn. Two of the four take the form of the traditional "theme and variations," while the two other are arrangements of popular opera arias of the time: "Joseph in Egypt" by Etienne Nicolas Méhul; the dramatic aria of Desdemona from the act two of Gioacchino Rossini's Othello and "Gabriella di Vergi" by Michele Carafa.

Sonata by Roger Steptoe. For trumpet and organ. Contemporary. Intermediate / advanced. Composed 2008. Duration 16 minutes. Published by Editions BIM (ET.TP292). Written for the Anglo-American trumpeter, Graham Ashton, and American organist, Christopher Jacobson, it was first performed in Washington National Cathedral, USA, on 25th January 2009 as part of the Cathedral's 2008/09 Organ Recital Series. Cast in four contrasting movements, the first is highly festive and rhythmic with much inter-play between trumpet and organ. The second, a sleek scherzo, features fanfare-like trumpet calls over a constantly-changing luxuriant bed of pulsating harmonies. The third is a 'vocalise' for trumpet. The final movement is based on a recurring 'ground bass' or 'passacaglia'. The mood is celebratory and the festivities of the first movement brings the Sonata to an energetic and jubilant end.

Concerto 2010 by Anthony Plog. For brass quintet and wind ensemble (quintet: 2 trumpets, horn, trombone, tuba [or bass trombone]; Wind ensemble: 6 flutes (min.3)[picc.], 3 oboes [e.hn], 9 clarinets (min.3), 1 bass clarinet, 2 bassoons - percussion (3), 4 horns (F), 2 trumpets (Bb), trombone, bass trombone). Contemporary. Advanced. Score. Composed 2010. Duration 17 minutes. Published by Editions BIM (ET.ENS200B). The Concerto 2010 is a four movement work for the combination of brass quintet and wind ensemble, and in certain passages the relationshíp between the two groups is the traditional one of soloist and accompaniment.  But quite frequently this relationship becomes instead a partnership, with different voices of the brass quintet mixed with single voices of the wind ensemble, and the interplay of these two ideas provides much of the material for  this work. The first movement begins with the wind ensemble playing a theme that is calm and reflective, and this opening theme provides much of the melodic and harmonic basis for all that follows.  After this short introduction an energetic allegro introduces the brass quintet, and in the middle of this allegro section a jazz element is introduced which is based on the opening intervals of the work.  A return to this opening slow theme brings the movement to a close and a short transition leads to the second movement, which features the two trumpets of the brass quintet in many double tonguing passages. The use of mutes provides extra color possibilities.Part two of the Concerto 2010 begins with a somber fugue in the clarinets, and a secondary theme then becomes the main theme for the last movements, which again is lively and energetic.  After a cadenza featuring the brass quintet Concerto 2010 is concluded with a final reference to the opening theme.

Sonata concertante in Re minore by Cyril James Squire. For string orchestra. Swiss Composers Series. Contemporary. Orchestra score. Composed 2007. Duration 21 minutes 15 seconds. Published by Editions BIM (ET.ORCH69B). This work was originally the Sonata for piano which obtained a First prize in Paris. Several decades later, following a commission by the Chamber Orchestra of Neuchâtel (Switzerland), it was rewritten, with some modifications, as Sonata concertante for string instruments and received its performance in September 2000 by the Neuchâtel ensemble conducted by Jan Schultsz at Pontarlier (France), as part of the Besançon Music Festival. Musical criticism recognized a sound and personal style, a captivating sense of rhythm and a tender lyricism in the slow movement with its cello solo part. A final version performed by the same ensemble in March 2008 at Neuchâtel was once again warmly welcomed by the audience.
