Midlands Melody. (For Cello And Piano). By Eric Ewazen. For cello solo and piano. This edition: Cello Version. Contemporary. Solo part with piano reduction. Standard notation. 8+2 pages. Duration 5 minutes. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.114415470). With standard notation. Contemporary. It seems only natural that Ewazen's beautiful Midlands Melody, originally written for bass trombone, has been co-opted by cellists, since the melodic line lays so well upon the strings. Dedicated to the young and promising cellist, Najette Abouelhadi, this is now Ewazen's "official" transcription for cello. For intermediate to advanced performers.

Variations And Fugue On/Brahms by Eric Ewazen. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.114414950). Ewazen was commissioned to write a trumpet and piano piece fashioned after the Brahms Intermezzo Op. 117 No. 1, and this became his first foray into construction of variations. The opening melodic line is purposely "peaceful," yet becoming fragmented over time, leading to the first of five diverse variations. The original line appears again at the end, an inspiration offered by trumpeter Chris Gekker, for whom the work was written. View a recent performance on YouTube, by Anne Kovarik (trumpet) and Paul Carroll (piano). For advanced performers. Dur.: 10'.

Lobet Gott in seinen Reichen (Ascension oratorio). By Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Edited by Ulrich Leisinger. For SATB vocal soli, SATB choir, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 3 trumpets, timpani, 2 violins, viola, basso continuo. D-Dur (D major). Stuttgart Urtext Edition. German title: Himmelfahrtsoratorium. Cantatas, Oratorios, Ascension. Complete orchestral parts. Language: German. Composed 1735. BWV 11. Duration 32 minutes. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3101119). ISBN M-007-04207-3. With Language: German. Cantatas, Oratorios, Ascension. Besides the Weihnachtsoratorium BVW 248, Bach composed an additional work for the feast days of the church year 1734/35: The Himmelfahrtsoratorium BWV 11 (Ascension Oratorio). Although in its dimensions and character the oratorio is akin to his cantatas, it occupies a special position as a result of the epic text on which it is based; the text includes a biblical story. In particular, the festive atmosphere and instrumentation of the opening and closing choruses mirror the triumphant joy of Christ's ascension. This is a new edition in the Stuttgart Bach Editions series, edited by Ulrich Leisinger.

Christians, etch this blessed day (Cantata for the 1st day of Christmas). By Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Edited by Reinhold Kubik. Arranged by Paul Horn. For SATB vocal soli, SATB choir, 3 oboes, bassoon, 4 trumpets, timpani, 2 violins, viola, basso continuo. C-Dur (C major). German title: Christen, atzet diesen Tag. Cantatas, Christmas. Level 3. Complete orchestral parts. Language: German/English. Composed 1715. BWV 63. Duration 27 minutes. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3106319). ISBN M-007-04375-9. With Language: German/English. Cantatas, Christmas. With its scoring for a large number of performers, who according to earlier practice were divided into various groups, this Cantata is clearly a festive work. In the richness of its scoring it was equalled, but not surpassed, by Bach's first Leipzig Cantate for the Election of the Town Council, BWV 119, of 1723. It is noticeable that the words of BWV 63 relate to Christmas only in the recitatives, while the choruses and arias express the praise of God in general terms.

Christus (Oratorienfragment. Teil I: Die Geburt Christi; Teil II: Das Leiden Christi). By Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn (1809-1847). Edited by R. Larry Todd. For tenor solo voice, SATTBB choir, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, timpani, 2 violins, viola, cello, contrabass. Stuttgart Urtext Edition. German title: Leiden Christi, Christus Teil II. Oratorios, Lent and Passiontide, Holy Week, Christmas. Level 3. Complete orchestral parts. Language: German/English. Composed 1847. Op. 97. Duration 21 minutes. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.4017019). With Language: German/English. Oratorios, Lent and Passiontide, Holy Week, Christmas. Mendelssohns unfinished 3rd oratorio in its first critical edition. The parts "Die Geburt Christi" and "Das Leiden Christi" are presented with full orchestration. In 1852, five years after Mendelsohn's death, two independently-performable fragments of an unfinished oratorio were published under the title "Christus". The second fragment, "The Suffering of Jesus", comes from the middle of the Passion story: the scene "Jesus before Pilot" is presented with rapid, dramatic alternation between the recitatives of the evangelist (tenor) and choruses of the people. A contemplative choral movement closes the fragment.

Mass in C major (Sparrow Mass). By Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791). Edited by Berthold Over. For Soli SATB, SATB Choir, 2 Clarinos/Trumpets, Timpani, 2 Violins, Basso continuo, [3 Trombones]. C-Dur (C major). Stuttgart Urtext Edition. German title: Missa in C (Spatzen-Messe). Masses, Latin. Level 2. Complete orchestral parts. Language: Latin. Composed circa 1775-76. KV 220 (196b). Duration 18 minutes. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.4062619). ISBN M-007-08465-3. With Language: Latin. Masses, Latin. An unusual feature of this Mass is its cyclic form, a compositional principle which Mozart first introduced in his masses in this "Mass in C": in the Agnus Dei ("Dona nobis pacem") he reverted to the music of the Kyrie, thus giving the Mass overall musical unity. Another unusual feature of this work is its popular character. This is evident both in its catchy themes and in its relatively straigthforward musical structure.

Exsultate, jubilate (Solomotette zum Dreifaltigkeitsfest oder zu Weihnachten). By Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791). Edited by Wolfgang Hochstein. For Soprano Voice Solo, 2 Oboes (2 Flutes), 2 Horns, 2 Violins, Viola, Cello/Bassoon/Contrabass, Organ. F-Dur (F major). Stuttgart Urtext Edition. German title: Exsultate, jubilate. Trinity, Christmas, Praise and thanks, Feasts of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Hymns in praise of the Virgin Mary. Complete orchestral parts. Language: Latin. Composed 1773. KV 165 (158a). Duration 17 minutes. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.4076719). ISBN M-007-08505-6. With Language: Latin. Trinity, Christmas, Praise and thanks, Feasts of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Hymns in praise of the Virgin Mary. A good six years following its first performance in Milan (1773) a second version of Exsultate, jubilate was completed for a performance on Trinity Sunday in 1779. It has survived in a manuscript from Salzburg. This "Salzburg version," which was discovered in 1978, differs from the "Milan version" primarily through the use of flutes instead of oboes and also through the use of two different texts for the first aria. In the first version the text refers to Christmas, whereas in the second version it refers to the festival of Trinity. Mozart's autograph of the Milan version had been thought to be missing since the second world war and it has only been accessible in the Biblioteka Jagiellonska in Krakow for a little over a decade. The present new critical edition by Wolfgang Hochstein is the first which could be based on both versions.
