Carl Maria von Weber hat seine Beruhmtheit vor allem dem Freischutz zu verdanken, dessen beispielloser Erfolg das ubrige Schaffen des Komponisten mehr und mehr in Vergessenheit geraten liess, obwohl noch bis in die zweite Halfte des 19. Jahrhunderts Werke wie Preciosa, Oberon und Euryanthe, die Ouverturen, Solokonzerte und Klaviersonaten oder auch die Lieder und Kammermusiken sich grosser Beliebtheit erfreuten und weit uber Deutschland hinaus verbreitet waren. Die Chance einer Wiederbelebung seines umfang- und einflussreichen A!uvres wurde in den zwanziger Jahren unseres Jahrhunderts vertan, als eine von Hans Joachim Moser begonnene Gesamtausgabe, an der sich Personlichkeiten wie Wilhelm Kempff, Hans Pfitzner, Max von Schillings, Fritz Stein und Richard Strauss beteiligen wollten, schon mit dem dritten Bande zum Erliegen kam. Seither fehlte es nicht an Versuchen, eine Gesamtausgabe der Werke Webers wieder in Gang zu bringen, allerdings liess die politische Entwicklung nach 1945 wenig Spielraum fur ein Projekt, das nur durch Beteiligung von Wissenschaftlern aus beiden deutschen Staaten zum Erfolg hatte gefuhrt werden konnen. Erst in den achtziger Jahren konnten durch behutsame Verhandlungen konkrete Schritte in die Wege geleitet werden. Dabei war von Anfang an vorgesehen, Webers kompositorisches Werk nicht von seinen folgenreichen Arbeiten als Musikschriftsteller, Kritiker und Organisator zu trennen, sondern mit den Kompositionen auch die Briefe, Tagebucher und Schriften zu veroffentlichen, da nur so die vielfachen Wechselbeziehungen zwischen seinem musikalischen, schriftstellerischen und praktischen Wirken deutlich zu machen sind. Seit der Wiedervereinigung wird nun gemeinsam von den beiden Arbeitsstellen an der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin und am Musikwissenschaftlichen Seminar Detmold/Paderborn die Gesamtausgabe der Musikalischen Werke erarbeitet (ca. 45 Bande in 10 Serien: Kirchenmusik; Kantaten, Huldigungsmusiken und andere Gelegenheitswerke; Buhnenwerke; Lieder und Gesange; Orchesterwerke; Kammermusik; Klaviermusik; Klavierauszuge; Varia, Bearbeitungen und Instrumentierungen; Zweifelhafte Werke). Die Ausgabe der Tagebucher (6a!!8 Bande) wird von der Berliner, die der Briefe (8a!!10 Bande) und Schriften (2 Bande) von der Detmolder Arbeitsstelle betreut. Die Gesamtausgabe soll sowohl fur die wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung als auch fur die werktreue Pflege der Musik Carl Maria von Webers eine verlassliche Grundlage schaffen. Dem Standard neuester historisch-kritischer Ausgaben folgend werden auf der Grundlage aller erreichbaren Quellen authentische Werktexte vorgelegt und mit einer eingehenden Dokumentation der Werkgenese und ggf. abweichender Fassungen verbunden. Der historische Stellenwert der Werke wird durch die Darlegung ihrer Entstehungs- und Uberlieferungsgeschichte und durch die Kritischen Berichte erschlossen. Die Briefe, Schriften und Tagebucher werden in den Kommentaren als aufeinander bezogene Texte behandelt, so dass dem Leser ein Maximum an Information und Querverbindungen auf engstem Raume geboten werden kann.

In Donald Grantham's uniquely original composition, Fantasy Variations, both of the "big" tunes in the piece are fully exploited, but they do not appear in recognizable form until near the end. The work begins with much more obscure fragments drawn from the introduction, accompanimental figures, transitions, cadences and so forth. These eventually give way to more familiar motives derived from the themes themselves. All of these elements are gradually assembled over the last half of the piece until the themes finally appear in more or less their original form.

Rhapsody in Blue is a musical composition by George Gershwin for solo piano and jazz band written in 1924, which combines elements of classical music with jazz-influenced effects. The composition was orchestrated by Ferde Grofe three times, in 1924, in 1926, and finally in 1946. The piece received its premiere in a concert entitled An Experiment in Modern Music, which was held on February 12, 1924, in Aeolian Hall, New York, by Paul Whiteman and his band with Gershwin playing the piano. The version for piano and symphony orchestra, orchestrated by Ferde Grofe in 1942, has become one of the most popular American concert works.
